We have a 3 year old neutered American Eskimo and just brought home a 10 week old American Eskimo female. We have had the two of them over a week. We know that humping is a way of establishing dominance. Our concerns come out of the fact that the 3 year old's penis will extend out from his prepuce. We know we are not supposed to interfer however we feel like we need to to prevent her from being penetrated.

Has anyone else had this issue? This does not seem normal for a neutered dog. We will bring this up to our vet when he gets back from vacation.

Any help or insight anyone can provide will be greatly appreciated.

Yes you should interfere. It's normal but it should not be over looked. This behavior is unwanted and should be known to the dog as that.Spank his pants and tell him NO or KNOCK IT OFF.He'll get the idea.
And a 10 weeks old puppy will not be in heat already. They don't start that untill 5 - 6 months old.He could hurt her and damage her for life.Spay her too at that age.If your vet say's to wait fir ANY REASON,find a new vet.

I've heard from people in similar curcumstances that although the neutered male dog's penis is coming out it is not able to penetrate her (meaning that although humping occurs actual mounting does not)...these people told me to ignore the behavior and to let the dogs be
in my opinion when there is a dominance struggle in the house between pets the owner should step in and assert themselves as being dominant...although I do not agree with spanking and the word "no" can be ignored by a dog that is overly distracted or not properly trained...I feel one of the better ways to prevent this behavior and to stop it once it starts is to distract the dog whenever you observe the behavior about to occur or already occuring...a good distraction might be a treat or a toy...in order to make sure the dog does not assosicate the treat/toy as a reward for humping I'd use the toy to distract the dog, then say sit, once the dog sits count to five in your head, then give the dog the toy...this method distracts the dog without teaching the dog that humping is good and without physical punishment...you may need to keep the dogs separated when no one is home to supervise them for long periods of time for a while
good luck -hope this helps!
ps, when you find out what your vet has to say on the subject please do post it or email me via my account -- I'd like to hear what he/she says on the matter (I'm all for knowledge and this situtation is a troubling one)

Its ok to interfere as long as he hasn't penetrated yet. It can be normal for a neutered male to still have tendences but is unusual. However, she is a female dog, im assuming not spayed, in his territory, and he wants her and to be the dominant one. My dog did the exact same thing until we fixed the female. If she isn't in heat then he's trying to establish dominance, let him do it. Its how dogs learn there place with each other. Even if they do penetrate it's ok. Just let them finish otherwise you risk hurting them. Once the newness of a new dog wears off or you get her fixed he will stop. Its totally normal.

It's nothing to worry about. If he begins to penetrate, the pup will yelp loudly and get into a non-penetrable position. If she (the pup) has not been neutered, at some point she will go into heat and the male may mount and even get fast but there will be no pups produced.

as quickly as he's been neutered, the humping is not any longer a sexual habit, yet rather a habit that should be experienced out of him. in basic terms permit him understand that he's not any longer allowed to hump you, and at last he will study to end doing it and his want will pass away.
