My cousin has a little girl named Harley, so it sounds feminine to me. Toby is like a couch potato. Nemo you know.... Mylo reminds me of a Pug I wander why. Shiloh would be like a Shiloh Shepherd big beautiful and impressive. Merlin is a nice name for most any dog from Dane to Corgi

-Harley is slowly becoming a girl's name. If you like it for a male dog, there's no reason not to use it, but honestly most of the animals I've known named Harley have been female.

-Toby makes me think of a hound. Or a black lab. Or a terrier mix. I like it as a name for a dog.

-Nemo kind of makes me think of a german shepherd. But honestly, I don't care much for it.

-Mylo, now this name I like! It sort of reminds me of Milo and Otis, but it also makes me think of a spaniel or setter.

-Shiloh does sound like something an unimaginative person (or one who REALLY liked the books) would name a beagle. I really don't like this name at all, even for a beagle. But if you like it, then it really doesn't matter if I like it or not.

-Merlin sounds like a lab name to me. Or maybe a border collie or australian shepherd. I'm also not really fond of this name.

When picking a name for a dog it may help to keep in mind that dogs respond better to hard consonants and short vowels (like the ones in Toby, Nemo, and Mylo) than they do to soft consonants and long vowels (like in Harley, Shiloh, and Merlin). They also respond better to short one or two syllable names. Personally I prefer two syllables because you can make them sound short and hard when you need to (like when the dog is about to run into the street or you catch him chewing on something innapropriate) but you can also say it in a fun, sweet sing-song voice when you want to praise them.

Harley ... Davidson - motorcycle
Toby ... McQuire - actor
Nemo ... Character - Clown fish
Mylo ... and Otis - a cat and dog movie
Shiloh ... Character - Story of a beagle
Merlin ... Wizard

I guess you knew all of this though in picking the names out. For a HE dog, out of these, I like Toby, Mylo and Shiloh best. Good luck and congrats on your new pup!

Just my opinions, but that's what you wanted....

Harley makes me think the dog is an ego trip for the owner. That is, the owner wants the dog to make him look cool, or he wants to sound cool when he's talking to the dog. Not a good thing.

Toby makes me think of a little kid. I hate it when people give their dogs people names. Think about the poor kid who's at school and a classmate says "Your name is Toby? My DOG'S name is Toby! Hahahahahaha!" and from then on he's greeted with "WOOF!" every day, by nearly everyone.

Nemo is like a little Napoleon, a spoiled rotten dog that rules the household.

Mylo is cute, makes me think of a nice, kid-friendly, happy-go-lucky farm dog.

Shiloh is usually a girl dog. Makes me think of a German Shepherd for some reason.

Merlin is good, a smart, energetic dog. Good name for a Border Collie. They learn tricks like magic! ;-)

Harley and Toby do sound like big dog names, but the others sound like the standard names for small dogs. Harley is the only name i like, but its fairly common, and i prefer more original names for dogs.
