I fish in a salt-water lake. And the water is usually brown.

Some people have told me that the appropriate color depends on the weather (i.e. sun/fog/rain etc.). And some people tell me it depends on the water color. What should I believe?

Good colors for "Brackish" Saltwater creeks & lakes are:
(in order of effective-ness)

1. Chartruese or Lime green
2. Rootbeer or Pumpkin-black Flake
3. White (with a red jig-head)
4. Pink

For more "freshwater" than "salt" creeks & lakes:
1. Red Shad or Tequila Shad
2. Pumpkin/Green Flake or Pumpkin/black flake
3. Black
4. Bubble Gum
5. Blue/Black

Generally speaking, your Greens, Blues, & Pinks will "stand-out" more in murky waters. Red virtually disappears in more than 8-10 Ft of water; 5-8 Ft in darker water! Thats why they make fishing line with "red" pigment.

Funny thing is, it doesn't matter that red disappears! Red is an excellent color for all forms of fishing because it mimics bleeding "critters" of all type. And fish are "attuned" to looking for red because it means "easy prey" in there small minds. That's why you see it used on soft plastic baits , as well as hard baits.

If I had to choose 1-2 colors for saltwater fishing I would say Lime green (chartruese) and Rootbeer.

The flourescent color of Chartruese is great in super muddy creeks ,(intercoastal or Indian River), and Rootbeer is excellent in clear water because it mimics "fiddler's" and Mud Minnows.

Try it! Just remember to "dose" your saltwater lures with a bit of pogey/menhaden oil spray so your quarry will hold onto your lure long enough for you to STRIKE!

Good luck! And catch a fish!

Both acually. The weather plays a big part in it, but the water color also plays a role.

I never go by the color of the water. If the weather is overcast I will go with something like motoroil or tequllia sunrise. If it's bright and sunny, I will stick with a red shad or pumpkin seed. But I probably have 15-20 different colors of worms and lizards so, if one my favorites doesn't work, then I'll switch to something that would be my last choice to use. Then if that doesn't work after 30 mins or so I'll switch to a crankbait or spinnerbait. Again the only way I determine what to use and what not to use depends on the weather. I don't care if they water is muddy or if you can see 8-10 ft under the water. I'll find something in my tackle box that they'll bite, even if it takes me all day to figure it out. lol

Good luck!

Both can play factors. Colors also vary on the type of fish you are fishing for. Usually the darker the water and weather, the brighter the bait. The brighter the water and weather, you cab use dakrer baits. But, the best thing to do is just try multiple colors wherever you fish. Hope this helps....

It does depend on the water. I like baits that are more natural looking. Just look around at what food the bass have. Go off of that. Also i find thak black with some purple in it works well. Good Luck

in the day time i use blue or red,at night i use black, and it has always worked for me.i bought one of those color coder with the sensor that you let down into the water and it is suppose to tell you what color worm to fish with, but it didnt work for me.so i went back to my way and caught fish.its hard to tell someone what color to fish with, just be flexable and give each color a chance.you will find one that works.good luck.

It varies, type of fish, your skill, water, weather.. Pretty much, see what works for others, try it, if it works for you, then that is a good choice.

If the fish bite the color you have dangling in the water, then you made a good choice.
