It's also selfish and self-centered to think that people who don't do this but who believe when times are 'good' and when not faced with crisis are less selfish or 'better' than others. This is what Jesus tried to get across with the 'good' son in the prodigal son parable.

Because when somebody lacks self-control and self-responsibility, they'll have a moment where they just give up and plea. Then they psychologically project all of their self-responsibility on to an external ego projection. That's all the "born again" experience is. It feels great at first, but the feeling doesn't last, and you could get the same self-deceiving feeling of bliss from "surrendering" to a baked potato. You just don't have the baked potato literature to reinforce the idea.

you absolutely right, but it should not be so
we should worship God regardless of our earthly situations!but man has so fallen only pain and suffering can awaken him from his spiritual slumber.
but whatever leads us to God should just serve as a temporal guide.once you have found your way to Him,you must endeavor to worship Him fully devouted!you must stand in humility before Him!
all will soon change, then man will be left with no other choice but to bow in humulity!

Selfishness, they can't handle the reality, so they make themselves feel better by thinking that it's all part of some great plan that they can't comprehend.

I don't turn to god in need, but I don't judge those who do. I'm sure that desperate people do desperate things.

Because deep down, even though they don't acknowledge him in their day to day lives, they know He exists and they know that He is the only source of help in times of trouble.
