I'm thinking about buying 2 golden retrievers/yellow labs in july. They are about 6 months old. If i do buy them I want to let them experiance swimming and water, but i don't have a pool. What age should I start introducing them to water?

Well I do have a blow up pool that is about 3 feet deep and has plenty of room to swim around in. The only problem is that you have to have a ladder to get into it. Would they be able to stand and get in and out of it?

I usually don't use the ladder cause i can just go over it.

HI! I had my golden's in the water swimming as soon as 10 weeks old. You dogs will be old enough to join you in a swim at a lake or in a pool. You can get them a kiddy pool at WalMart their 13 dollars for a larger one. You best pick up one or 2 now before they are all gone. They won't be able o swim in these but they will enjoy jumping in and out and just laying in them. They are quite funny to watch too.

Start as soon as you get them. You can get a plastic kiddie pool or take them to a nearby lake or pond or to the beach. Don't try to lead them in, just run along the edge and throw in toys for them to retrieve. They'll figure it out. If you're at the beach, be very careful not to let your pups get carried out by the current or crashed by the waves. If they get carried under with a big wave, it may frighten them. In a lake, pond, or stream, they're much safer. Good luck with them. Both of the breeds you mention love the water!

Hunters get their dogs into water at 6 weeks or so. The easiest way is to go to a shallow beach and you go in, they will usually follow and find out how fun it is. My Lab is a terrific water dog which horrified my Dobe but he is now going in on tiptoes and hopefully will swim soon. Since he likes to retrieve, he has picked up lots of Lab habits so we call him a Dobeador, he will go in to fetch the ball as long as his nails touch. Since your guys should be avid retrievers too you can throw balls first to the waters edge then a little further etc. A dog that loves swimming helps show them it is fun too but with that breed mix they should love the water.

as soon as you get them. Get a little plastic kiddie pool, keep it filled with water in your back yard. It isn't to deep, but they'll love it. Now not all dog will go hay wire over it, but labs really do. You can introduce them right away.

Introduce them right away.

For pups, buy a wading pool and throw treats/toys in it to entice them in. They will enjoy wading around in it and sitting in the cool water all summer.

Then take them to a lake, or a river or stream - let them splash, wade and eventually swim.
