Yes!
Dogs do not need "foaming" toothpaste. There is a special ingredient in human paste that causes the foam that we like in toothpaste.
There are also many ingredients that are not good for dogs, including artificial sweeteners. Some sweeteners have been found to cause health problems like liver failure.
Fluoride is also not good for them.
Go to a local pet store and buy dog paste. They sell it in many flavors like mint, liver, and chicken!
They also sell soft brushes for dogs so it doesn't hurt their gums. Baby toothbrushes also work.

Dental care is very important in dogs and cats. Dental disease can lead to more serious problems- like kidney and heart disease. Ideally, your dog's teeth should be brushed every other day. Use a toothpaste designed for dogs (as others have said, human toothpaste isn't meant to be swallowed), and you can use either a dog toothbrush or a soft children's human toothbrush. You can start training your dog to have its teeth brushed by letting it lick the toothpaste off your finger. Then next time, rub your finger on just one tooth. Each time, add another tooth until your dog will let you run your finger throughout its entire mouth. Then start over with the dog licking the toothpaste off the brush and repeat the single tooth method. I always give my dogs a crunchy treat afterwards so they have learned to love getting their teeth brushed. Chew toys and water additives can help, but nothing replaces the action of brushing the teeth. Your dog will still need regular teeth cleanings at the dentist (which must be done under general anesthesia in order to be beneficial) to get the plaque and tartar that reside under the gums. Another benefit to regular brushings is that you will become familiar with your dog's mouth and will notice injuries such as broken and chipped teeth much earlier. It is important to have these issues addressed as an exposed tooth pulp provides a direct route for bacteria to enter your dog's blood stream. Good luck!

Yes! Minty human toothpastes will upset your dog's stomach. And most dogs just don't enjoy a strong mint taste like we do. Get him a meat flavored paste from the vet or your local pet store. Your pooch will thank you!
