Since hip replacement surgery is usually considered an "elective" procedure [meaning that it isn't likely to be done on an emergency basis and therefore may be planned for and scheduled well in advance], ortho surgeons usually assess (and also have the patient's primary care physician assess) the medical status of the patient before operating. It's unlikely that surgeons would do this procedure on someone whose health would be seriously compromised by major elective surgery. This is the reason for the battery of pre-op tests that precede such surgery.

A typical hospital stay after hip replacement these days would be 3-5 days. I have had both of my hips replaced in separate surgeries several months apart and I was in the hospital 4 days for each.

I had visits several times a day from physical therapists while in the hospital. This was continued after I went home by a therapist who came to my house about 4 times over the next 2 weeks. I did prescribed exercises 3 times a day every day even though the therapist didn't come every day. After that (at about week 4) I began outpatient therapy 2-3 times a week. This lasted about 5 weeks and I was on my own after that. However I continued to do daily exercises for several months.

By the time I had my hips replaced, I was this close to spending the rest of my life in a wheelchair. As it was, by surgery day I couldn't take a step without a cane. I consider this surgery a major miracle. It is one of the most successful surgical procedures done today in terms of how it relieves pain and restores function in people who would otherwise become burdens to their families and to society. It has given me back a life.

Hello Hope Well Done. I was supposed to have hip surgery years ago. However, everyone I spoke with that had had hip surgery told me not to get one, because their hip hurt worse than it did before surgery. Over half of them can't even walk on them anymore and I'm still walking fairly good. Yes, I do live on pain medication, but will have to for the rest of my life anyway. My whole spine is shot and my bones are too soft to have surgery now anyway. So, it's up to you. But, as for the rest of your question on the hospital stay and physical therapy I can't help you with. I don't know. I'm sorry. But, you'll have to make this decision on your own, of course. I don't know how bad your hip is either. I can barely step on mine and have to use two hand canes. Oh well.. Such is life. Be happy, love and be kind to everyone. God's blessing are on you friend.

The price of hip surgery is very low in India as compared to USA, UK and Canada. My cousin also got her hip replacement surgery in India through the forerunners healthcare .She is more than very happy with the results. She is totally pain free now. She just paid 25% of the amount she was quoted in USA and is all praise for this forerunners healthcare company.

Forerunners Healthcare is very famous in India. I read a lot about them in the Newspapers and magazines. I have read a lot of their patient stories also. They arrange financing for USA, Canadian, UK and other international patients who plan to have surgery abroad for low price, as all joint surgery is not covered by insurance in USA or by NHS in the UK. They also have photos pasted of their International patients. You can checkout their website. There are huge cost savings. As a doctor I personally believe that your surgery can be easily handled in India, as the quality of healthcare available In India is simply best in the world. The surgeons are USA/UK trained and facilities are 5 star.

Hope this helps.
