ok, i'm reading the bible which started off quite entertaining. the garden of eden, noah's ark, joseph and his amazing technicolor dreamcoat, good stories. but after that it's all killing people, burning their towns and taking their land. is this going to go on for much longer? i'd really like to finish it but it's getting a tad tedious. i'm up to the beginning of 'judges'. am i anywhere near any good bits? should i skip a few books?

Oh no! you are getting to the good part! Judges has some great stories in it. There is Gideon, Ehud the left handed Judge, Deborah and Samson and Delilah. Some are really gory but entertaining.

Judges isn't horrible. Ruth is good. 1-2 Samuel is good.

You'll find lots of duplication in Kings and Chronicles. Skim those.

Ezra, Nehemiah, Esther are good.

Job is long. Psalms is poetry. Proverbs and Ecclesiastes are interesting. Song of Solomon is more poetry.

Then we get into the prophets. You need to read these with a good commentary so you can get some historical background as you go.

Daniel is one of the prophets but is good reading on its own.

More prophets...

Jonah is good.

More prophets...

New Testament is all good. Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John all cover the same material. Read Mark. It's short. If you like Mark read John. It's written in a completely different style. Acts is good .... early church history.

The rest of the New Testament is very doctrinal and teaching oriented. It's good reading but it's not "stories" like you've read so far.

Revelation is a tough read because there's so much symbolism.

Don't feel like you have to read every word. A good single-volume commentary like the Bible Knowledge Commentary or even the New Unger's Bible Handbook will help you get through the tough parts.

First of all i applaud you for getting this far. Actually in the next book "Ruth" you get a little bit of a break from the killing and after that it you get more killing but not a lot and not in the same detail as in Joshua and judges. After I and 2 chronicles you get to all the prophets and then the New Testament. So keep going the best is yet to come.

Your almost done with the hardest parts, soon you'll be getting into I Samuel were things really get interesting. I might also suggest a daily reading that involves different parts of the Bible every day...reading it front to back can be tedious. I use The One Year Bible plan and change Bible versions every year.

Joshua is good, but maybe it is time for you to read the Book of John in the New Testament. Then read the Book of Daniel in the Old Testament and the book of Revelation in the New Testament which is the last book. Then go back to Joshua.

Keep this in mind: the Lord is not putting evil on us, but giving us over to the devices of our own heart until we've had enough.

I would suggest you start with the book of John in the New Testament. From there, read the book of Romans and the other three gospels; Matthew, Mark, and Luke. It is much easier to understand the Old Testament once you have read the New Testament.

You need to study the OT in order to understand the NT, if you miss Jesus in the OT, you wont know him in the nt, go back to gen. 3:15 where God makes his promise to all that Jesus would come from the seed of the woman not seeds, only singular, all Thur scripture God uses one individual to forfill that promise by the time you get to Matt.1:1 you will see were that starts to unfold. take 5 or 10 minutes a day the old testament is not that hard as everybody makes it out to be.

It is quite a good work of fiction isn't it? I think they should change a few more chapters though. you know like has been done over the past few centuries. Maybe they should give jesus a cape and the ability to fly? It might make it much more believable then. I think Not.

I know exaclty where you are comming from, and thought the devil had taken over for a while. Then someone said to me the OT is the word and the NT is the fulfilment of the word. You had to learn what is bad in order to see what is good.

Judges is one of the most interesting books of all so you must have a weird sense of entertainment.

C'mon Jael killing Sisera with a tent peg through his temple is pretty cool.
