- they are detected as 'new hardware' but 'database is locked' and drivers won't load - how do I unlock the database??

I have checked the cables, and tried uninstalling and reinstalling them - but still get the 'database locked error!

Please help - I really need to use them!!

ye s- been through device manager, rebooted several times (finds both drives as 'new hardware' on each occasion, but csn't load drivers because of the 'database locked' problem)

None of these answers were any help - fixed it in the end by booting into 'safe mode' and then using 'system restore' -had to do it this way as system restore wouldn't work in windows.

have you restarted your computer?? if not restart your computer then try to uninstall and reinstall them and then reboot again

I've dealt with someone's laptop this past weekend with exactly the same problem ... her laptop wasn't showing her DVD-RW.

The way I solved it was to install Windows on top of itself. i.e., a non-destructive installation. This means writing a fresh copy of Windows on top of itself.

Well dont unplug it than! call the local computer store.
