In order to lose weight for good you need to establish new rules. I suggest:
(1) No more soda pop. OK, if you're totally addicted to it - limit yourself to 1 can per day. Drink juice instead. No more candy bard. Use cereal bars instead.
(2) Don't eat late. Allow 4 hours between your dinner and sleep. late meals tend to be stored as fat.
(3) Check and see if you're consumning a lot of fat. Cheese, pizza, McDonals, KFC is mostly fat. Avoid that.
Good food:
Whole grain bread
Fresh fruit
Fresh or steamed vegetablel
Non-fat yogurt
For daily workouts, I suggest finding a hobby or a group. It is much easier if you have some sort of suppot structure. Also, look for easy opportunities in your daily life. Walk at least 30 minutes a day. Take stairs instead of elevator. Maybe you can go hiking at least once a week with your friend. Joining a dance class is a good way too. Swimming is really good, if you have a place to swim. I find it very hard to stick to an exersise routine unless it has some kind of other meaning than pure calorie burn.

The best method is to eat about six balanced meals a day. That way you won't gorge three large meals. Try this: 8am-breakfast 11am snack 1pm lunch 3pm snack 6pm dinner 8pm snack. Eat smart and stay away from sugars and eat lots of proteins, ie fish, chicken.. Try to work out at LEAST three times a week!! If you don't have any equipment try push-ups and sit-ups and running. Bowflex also has a great credit program, you can pay $15 a month for one of their machines, I highly suggest looking into that. It's very hard to stay on track at first, but give it three weeks and I promise you will see results physically and mentally. You will also feel so much better. I really hope you succeed, I know it's hard but the results are worth every bit:)

I am 5'9 and i weigh about the same as you. What i have done and am going to do again, is i work out at least 4 times a week, do lots of cardio, to start off do about a half hour and as you build endurance go higher. Counting calories is a must, get a small notebook and a calorie counting book and keep track! For your height and weight you should eat about 1500 calories a day. Drink a lot of water and limit your intake of fried foods, fast food and soda. Make sure to eat 3 healthy meals a day and 2 snacks. Watch your portions and stop eating when you feel satisfied not full! Do not eat several hours before you go to bed as well. Here is a sample diet
Morning:
1 slice of wheat toast with peanut butter
orange
skim milk
Snack:
Apple
with peanut butter
Lunch:
Turkey sandwich on wheat or low fat bread
with fat free mayo or mustard
lettuce or whatever veggies you like
1/2 cup of cottage cheese
small amount of vegetables such as, carrot sticks, celery...
Snack:
1/2 cup almonds or a 100 calorie pack or your choosing
Dinner:
1 Grilled chicken breast
small side salad with low fat or not fat dressing
small glass of skim milk
1/2 cup steamed broccoli
So to re-cap make sure to stop eating when you feel satisfied and not full, drink a lot of water, do not eat friend unhealthy food, keep track of the calories you are consuming once you know what foods are what calories it's very easy, exercise at least 4 times a week, and do not eat right before you are going to bed...oh and one more thing limit your alcohol intake!
And one more thing...healthy choice and lean cuisines are great substitutes for lunch or dinner if do not have the time to cook....just heat up a dinner and add a side of fresh fruit or veggies and you are good to go!

if you want to weight 180 pounds, then eat 1800 calories - good balanced diet and exercise, drink water ( minimum daily requirements is 8 - 8oz glasses)
weight 165 pounds - 1650 calories ;
weight 160 pounds - 1600 calories ;
weight 120 pounds - 1200 calories ;
basically what weight you should be and add a zero 0 , thats how many calories you should take in daily,
our bodies need a good balance of a variety of foods, a good 7 grain bread ; nuts ; raisins ; fruits ; cereals - the kinds that are not full of sugars ; green veggies ; yellow veggies ; beans / legumes ; peanut butter - a good one that's not full of sugar ; as for meats - chicken ; fish - salmon is best - tuna is also good ; beef - which has less than 20% fat content ; you can spice foods up with seasonings and make them taste better, but be very careful of how much salt you eat - always less than 3000 mg daily , if you average it to 1,000 mg per meal that would be best. And don't forget to drink your water, the water helps the body flush all the bad stuff from our system and keeps the body / organs functioning properly.
no soda pop / cokes ; coffee ; tea - unless its herbal tea ; no beer / alcohol ; no chips / cookies / cakes / pies / candy's ;
get at least 30 minutes of walking in a day - a good fast walk rather than a slow one, the average speed of a good fast walk is 4 miles an hour - so 2 miles in half an hour , but if you are not used to walking fast it will take your body time to get used to it and get that fast, and don't over do it, you don't want to pass out - set a pace, if you need to stop and take a 5 minute rest.
walking is the absolute best exercise for our bodies!

find daily calorie intake calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 300-400cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.
eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours - it optimizes your metabolism)
5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day
8 glasses of water
have complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energy
have protein (lean meat, legumes etc) for dinner - repairs muscle
cardio exercise 4-6 times a week for 30-50min (ideally 45min because the first 20-30min body burns carbs and only then starts burning fat), light weight training (more muscle=faster metabolism)
dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, pasta etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, icecream, candy etc) and nothing fried, oily.
ofcourse you can spoil yourself once in a while with a little treat:)

AVOID food that contains hydrogenated oils (fried fast foods, etc.), high-fructose corn syrup (most, but not all sodas contain this, etc), and enriched flour . These ingredients have addictive qualities which makes you want to eat more. Just check the food label in the 'ingredients' part. America is the only country that has these ingredients which are literally fattening the people. Not only do they cause obesity, these ingredients are also a big contributer to many diseases such as cancer, stroke, heart disease, sclerosis (just to name a few). All other countries have banned these products from their food. I personally eat organic food, which is just food without these ingredients and organic food is grown/processed without chemicals and artificial ingredients. If you want more information, all you have to do is type in hydrogenated oil or high fructose corn syrup in google and loads of information will come up. Hope this helps ;-)

Get the recent issue of Fitness magazine. It has exercises in it for 15, 20, 30, 45 minutes, They dont require a gym. As for diet, some ideas are:
fresh fruits
Fresh vegetables
lean meats (chicken breast, ground turkey breast)
low fat yogurt
Cottage cheese
no sugar jello
wheat bread
pasta
oatmeal
Think healthy foods. Stay away from the chips, cookies, fruit juces - these are full of sugar and fat, even if they say they are low fat or low sugar.

Good for you. Realizing you need to lose weight is a good first step.
First: Purchase ONLY healthy foods - plenty of fruit, vegetables, LEAN MEATS and WHOLE WHEAT PASTA, WHOLE WHEAT BREAD.
Drink 1 litre of water per day.
Fast walk about 1 hr. per day.
AVOID eating after 6:00 PM. Try eating light for supper. Have a heavier lunch instead. Munch on carrots and celery when hungry.
VERY IMPORTANT: AVOID BUTTER SWEETS AND gravies.
DO NOT FRY YOUR MEATS, broil them instead.
Do that and you'll lose 20 lbs. in as many days.
Good luck
