um, dude ... they buy address data in bulk from the credit reporting firms. That gives them both the current address your bills are being mailed to as well as past similar addresses and when you changed addresses.

Not sure what is done for people who have a PO Box address. Of course, they could consult land records and that seems unlikely as it wouldn't be an automated application.

They certainly could if they had any reason to suspect that you were not being honest with them. I know a couple of folks who were asked by the IRS to prove their claim of living in their home for 2 of the 5 years prior to the date of sale.

You'd be wise to stay away from committing tax fraud by claiming the exemption if you're not entitled to it.
