a diffuser is an attachment for your blowdryer. its meant for curly hair. it "diffuses" the airflow from the blowdryer, and has "fingers" to help scrunch or make it curly. they help create volume and minimize frizz, they're about $20-$30 for a good one at sally's. most diffusers fit most hairdryers. here are some good ones...

***UPDATE***

diffusers are meant to CURL your hair. i dont know what the first person is talking about.

and in response to the third answer, nothing will give you the same look as a diffuser. it gives you full curls, lots of volume, and if its done correctly, your hair wont be crunchy.

i have the first one, it works really well. the second one is good too, because it comes w/ different attachments.

A diffuser is that thing that comes with a lot of blowdryers that looks like teeth and you attatch it to the end of the blow dryer. Pretty much, you put curling mousse in wet hair, grab it and shove it in the diffuser and just hold it there for a bit until you think it might be dry. It comes out all curly. Usually you have to get one with the blow dryer because that way you'll know it fits. And get one that has longer teeth, rather than a flatter wide one. If you use it right, the outcome is good. I've been doing it for a little while and maybe 9 times outta ten it'll turn out nice lol (and im so bad at doing my own hair). PS: Dove Curling Mousse is a good one to use.

Think about your shower. The shower head is a diffuser. Some shower heads have different settings on them, so you can make the spray gentle, or make it pulse, or whatever.
The diffuser does that for your hairdryer only it's diffusing (spreading) hot air instead of hot water.
Most blow dryers have variable settings on them, so you don't really need one unless you are into salon hairstyles.
It's really just another gadget. Get one if you want, but you can certainly live without it. And in a couple of months, there will be another gadget out that will supercede the diffuser.

you can get one a the grocery story they can be good but usually you can't use them if you're hair is dyed they are designed to straighten you're hair they can severly dry out you're hair it would be a better idea to just blow out you're hair the only thing is it takes more time to blow out you're hair cause you have to do it more frequently
