There was this guy at school whom I had a brief sexual realtionship with.We were laying about and talking and I told him how a few if HIS friends didn't like me and how one of them called me an outcast..he said you know what "You try to hard when you don't even have too"...how would you take something like that?

He might mean that you don have to try so hard to be like by everyone when it is nearly impossible for anyone to be liked by everyone.
Anyway, does that matters cos it is only having a bried sexual relationship with you. Sort of like one of your sex partners or the most the regular one only. There is no point for everyone of his friends to like you right?

like how he said it. i think he is trying to say: "just relax". you are cool and you do not need to prove that you are cool. it also means you are different from the norm and that is ok too. he just wants you to be okay with yourself. I think he likes the outcast in you.

Sounds like you're acting over the top for their tastes, where if you simply were polite and nice things would go over smoothly.
A case of "why is this person being so nice to us?"

I would take that as he likes you for you! Not to try to change or be something else for his friends to like you! You should never try to make someone like you they just should except you for you!

I know for myself I would take it to the heart but that is just me, if you don't take things personal than you should not let it get to you. Especially if you and this fellow are not together!
