Of course it's possible, several things to keep in mind, dry fuel produces very little smoke, the smaller the fire the less smoke, and overhead cover such as a low, leafy branch, or tarp will disperse the smoke making the plume harder to see.

In addition to dry wood, and building your fire under a tree (be careful on that one, if the leaves are dead and dry and close over a large fire, you can start a crown fire and ruin your day) you can build an Outlaw's Oven.
Dig a hole, small enough for your skillet or dutch oven to sit over the fire, but with room for air to get to the fire. Use dry wood and keep your fire small. The fire won't be visible from a distance and you can still cook a decent meal. When you are finished, just push the dirt back over the fire.
Or you can dig a small hole and sit a flat rock over the hole for a cooking surface. Be sure not to use a rock from a creek as the moisture might cause it to break.

A very hot (dry wood) very small (sticks no bigger than your thumb) fire. As the wood turns to coal spread it out to fryng pan size and keep it going like that until you have enough coals to cook with. You have to work the fire.
