We take him out at around 11 pm every night, so we are not going to bed too early. I feel bad crating him at night if we crate him during the day too. He whimpers and whines until we take him out, disrupting our sleep. It's been 2 weeks with 4 hours of sleep per night, and i am starting to get sick. I can't take it! What do I do?

and by the way "Jersey Girl", we are very responsible pet owners and happened to adopt a 9 year old abused dog, and are trying to work out the kinks. We already have 2 well cared for cats, and our dog will be well cared for also. So, I suggest you take your holier than thou attitude and shove it, or if you think you can do a better job, adopt my dog.

Make sure you are not doing anything to reinforce this behavior... do not pet him, play with him or talk nice to him at 4am. If he is getting up because he truly needs to go out, then take him out and let him do his thing without talking to him or playing with him.
Regarding whimpering in the crate... when you take him out, you are reinforcing this behavior. When he whines and whimpers in the crate, you can discourage the behavior by hitting the crate (not the dog) with a yard stick our making noise with a shake can (can filled with coins or pebbles).
I like to let my dogs sleep in the same room with me, but when they wake me up... that's it... into the crate (which is in another room) they go. It is very rare that they wake me up.
Good luck!

Wow! I know what thats like! Our situation was a little different, but we were getting NO sleep! Well, my husband was getting sleep because he had to get up and work everyday so, I was the one taking care of the puppy all day and all night! We had just got our second APBT and long story short, she would have died if we didnt get her when we did and get her to the vet. When we got her home from the vet a few days later I had to feed her every 3 to 4 hours!!!! : ( Talk about going through hell! As soon as I feel asleep I had to get back up! Anyway, I would suggest that you make your pup sleep in the crate every night! Thats what ours do. It took them a few days to get use to it, but once they did they loved their crates! Your pup wont ever be able to get use to sleeping in the crate at night if you dont make your pup sleep there every night. For a few nights he will cry, but you just have to stick to your guns and ignore him! After a few nights he should be fine with sleeping in his crate. Your pup is going to want to be close to you. If you let him sleep in the bed some nights and then make him sleep in the crate others, he will always want to be in the bed with you and he will wonder why he is in the crate right then and not in the bed. If he only sleeps in his crate he will see that as his bed and he will like his crate. His crate should be like his safe place, like his bedroom. I would also suggest putting a t-shirt or something that smells like you in the crate with your pup. You should make sure you get him nice and tired before you put him in the crate. Take him for a nice long walk and play with him for a while. I hope he gets use to his crate soon and I hope you are able to get some sleep soon! Good luck! : )
Oh I also wanted to add that it might be good if you put his crate pretty close to your bed (if it isnt already). Both of our dogs crates are next to our bed. That way your pup can see you and he knows hes not alone. Again, good luck! lol! : )

The age of the dog will make a difference. Has anyone mentioned kidney issues yet? Some dogs can't hold it because their kidneys are bad. You might want to rule that out first to make sure it's not a medical problem.

I hate to say it but crate him and ignore him and just get up and put him out on your schedule.
If you keep giving into him he will continue.
Sorry but that's aobut it.
Also if you take him out at 11 no food or water after 7 and that would aslo help.

If he/she is lonely, try putting him/her in her crate. Then, stand a few feet away from her/him. Then, if she starts whimpering or whining, more her away. If she is good, then more her closer. Hope this helps.

if you are crating him too much, you shouldn't have gotten a dog. either crate him, or walk him. next time, rethink your schedules before getting a pet. it's not responsible.
how old is he? if he's a puppy, he's going to whine. something to think about. and research. get a cat next time. poor puppy.

Tons more exercise thru the day so that he is tired enough to sleep all night long.
