If someone "busts a cap" in you from a 9, you WILL know it, the medical team trying to keep you alive will know it, the "5-0" will know it, and possibly your surviving family members will know it too.

Everyone want to talk about knockdown power. I agree the 45 is the best all around defensive gun. But, a lot of people have been killed with 22, 25, & 32.
You ask what kind of damage can be caused. First, it depends on the type of bullet. Second it depends on what it hits in the body. Then we begin talking about penetration, expansion, and fragmentation. Believe it or not, but shooting is a science.
If you are asking if the 9mm will blow parts of your body out the exit hole, the answer is problably not. It is lacking in the power section. But, bigger calibers do not always have large exit holes either. Again, it goes back to penetration, expansion, and fragmentation.
Now matter what, it is going to hurt to get shot by anything.

A 9mm may not put the image of power in your mind like a .45ACP, but it is a lethal projectile nonetheless. The 9mm doesn't have the knockdown power of a .45, which means it doesn't stop you in your tracks as easily when you are hit. Shots to vital areas will have much the same effect as a .45, you will probably die. The reason gang members use 9mm is because it is inexpensive, and many firearms can hold alot more rounds of 9mm. The U.S. military even uses a 9mm, the Berretta 92F, so it is obviously lethal.

It is a case of big brother.. they feel they are doing gun by denying us things. But FYI, you can buy suppressors. They just require you doing more paperwork and paying a $200 transfer tax and having them registered. I find it easier to just to reload my own ammo. A lot of the noise of the gun is the bullet going supersonic. Reduce the powder charge so the round stays subsonic and reduce the strength of the recoil spring in the semi-auto so the reduced recoil can still operate the slide. That of course turns a 45 into something more like a 380 but it will still get the job done but will do it rather quietly. Plus it all but eliminates the kick.

if i were to buy a handgun for protection, i wouldn't even consider a 9mm. its over-hyped and overrated. as for damage, its still gonna hurt. but it pales in comparison to the .45, .40 S&W, and even the .38

What kind of damage can a .9mm do? Anything from a flesh wound to a fatal shot.

By itself, nothing. It is the loose nut behind the trigger that can do the damage and yadda. This is true of just about everything mankind touches.

They are not the best 'man stoppers', but like any other gun, they can kill you dead. the Military uses the 9mm now but most of them would rather go back to using the .45 auto. which is the best 'man stopper'.

because saying "i am packing my 9" sounds cooler then saying "yo, packing my 22"
the 9 is actually a light weight weapon, a 40 is much much better.
the 9 gain huge popualrity when NATO decided to make it the standard weapon and years later the US military followed replacing the 45 with the 9.
but there have been numerous complaints about the stopping power of a 9, but do to the cheap and universally available ammo, it is here to stay.
gang bangers no next to nothing about guns, thats why they always go by what sounds cool, not by what actually works.
