How old does a baby cockatiel have to be before I can put him in a cage without having to put towels on the floor. He can perch on the bottom perch but he will not climb in the cage or sit on the top perch. I cover the bottom so he won't fall through the grate.

It depends on it's age and weight. If most of his pin feathers are grown put and he can fly a little on his own, he should be fine.

I always kept all my babies in a brooder until they were about 5 weeks old and pretty much fully feathered.then i would put then in a cage without the grate and just 1 low perch.when i see that they are climbing the sides i add another perch up just a little higher.i then also put regular seed&water dishes in cage where they can reach it from bottom perchalso i put some parakeet seed & cheerios scattered on the bottom(away from perches)for them to forage.at about 6 weeks i then start to gradually add cockatiel seed to the parakeet seed for them.i alays make sure they can break open millet and parakeet seed good before i add cockatiel mix.by 7-8 weeks tey can have grate in bottom as well as higher perches and more hanging toys to play with.hope this helps.i bred cockatiels for 4 years.

They should have soft foods in the cage as in rice and pasta and veggies. You will notice them climbing about the cage. I still wouldn't put higher perches in the cage till they are about 6 weeks old, because they tend to want to perch high when they sleep, but tend to fall too while sleeping.

Always keep a night light on at night. Tiels tend to have many night frights during the night time. Please cover their cage at night also. Birds drop their temp at night time too, and because this is a chick, they are notorious for drafts and dieing.

Good Luck!

When you see a lot of climbing and perching behavior. Until then, keep the bottom padded and a low perch available. You'll know!
