Being a former Marine and falling under the department of the Navy I can say that the Navy sure does fight in combat. In fact every war the United States has been involved in has had support from the Navy. Whether it is firing rounds from a ship at sea or sending group troops (yes the Navy does have ground troops) they do help. There are no "Marine Medics" so Navy Corpsman travel with Marines to tend to the wounded. Also the Navy Seabees build in all sorts of environments. And if you really wanted to consider it this way every war the Marine Corps fights in the Navy does as well since the Marines are the ground unit of the Navy.

The most important battle in American history was fought by the Navy. Admirals Nimitz and Spruance showed themselves to be brilliant tacticians as they out-thought the Japanese navy and caught them with the decks of their carriers loaded with planes--attack planes that could not take off because they were armed with land bombs, instead of torpedos. This was due to the fact that Navy ran a scam on the Japanese, making them think that the island of Midway was defended only on land, while a fleet of 10 American warships steamed towards the Japanese fleet. Only the carrier Yorktown was lost and about 300 sailors and Navy pilots. The Japanese lost 4 carriers (the heart of their Navy) and 3,000 men. They would never recover from this loss, early in the war, and this victory paved the way for ultimate victory in the Pacific.

June 7-9, 1942: Battle of Midway. Yes, the Navy does fight and when they do it is a terrifying spectacle to behold.

*sigh* Yes, I was there. The Marine Corps uses Navy medicine (and chaplains and their staff). As a Navy Corpsman, I've been assigned to HMH-363, HMM-161, various MAGs, 1/4 Bn, 3/7 Bn, 3d Tanks, 3d LAI, MACS-1, MASS-3 and the list goes on. With HMH-363, I lost 47 men in 2 1/2 years -- officially listed as "Training Accidents." With 3d LAI I lost 3 men in one night's action and two nights later, lost 11 more. I'm retired now, and at one point, found my sorry but on Effexor XR for about a year. That was a lousy experience. Now, I just drink gallons of coffee and avoid sleeping. Next question?

There is more to the Navy then just the ships and planes. For instances there are Mobile Security Units, Spec Warfare and numerous other jobs you really never hear about that are on the ground along with the Army and Marines.

The navy always has, and likely always will, take an active role in battles. Check with the history of WW2 and the War in the Pacific in particular, for information about the role of naval ships in battles. Then check with British history for information on Lord Nelson and some of the famous sea battles Britain fought. Even Germany, which is largely land locked, fought naval battles with the Graf Spree.

Oh, yeah, they fight. Two of my brothers retired from the Navy; one was an officer, the other a chief petty officer. The latter fought in Korea and in Vietnam. He was exposed to agent orange and has prostrate and bone cancer. He is now in his 70's...He also received a bunch of medals for valor, etc.
The Navy is the one that "softens up" the enemy; usually the Army and Marines are the ones to do the hand-to-hand or close up fighting. But, surely you have heard of the Navy Seals?

why don't you ask all the the navy corpsmen who fight along side with the marines, or the naval pilots who drop bombs to help any ground force in trouble, or the thousands of navy personnel who supply and resupply anyone in need. and i dont even want to know what those crazy submariners are doing, because i probably wont beleive it.. semper fi
