My German Shepherds has been chewing his back paws. But he never has done that before. About a month ago he was favoring a back foot but when I looked in it there wasn't anything stuck and we just thought he might of sprained it because he was fine a couple days later.

Recently he began aggressivly chewing his back paw. When I looked inside it was red, fairly oozy and swollen. I treated him for infection and also tested for a rash. I have him on a antibacterial pill and an antibiotic ointment/bactine on his actual foot. It seemed to get better but saturday it spread to his other backfoot and today he won't put pressure on it.

I also have both feet wrapped so he can't chew them. I have an E-collar but he can still get to his feet with it on. The paws are slightly swollen and red on the inside. There isn't discharge. There also aren't any puncture points.

Any ideas what this could be from?

I would love to take him to the vet but my mother is a single parent and we just got done with all 4 dogs vet appointments this year and their heartguard/Advantix treatments + dog food this cost almost two thousand dollars. It takes time before we can easily afford to take them to the vet again.

We don't buy dog food from the vet. We get dog foods that have not been on the recall lists lately because we are afraid of them getting sick.

FYI: to the haters:

If you take a dog to the shelter and it needs care since shelters are non-profit organizations they normally can't afford extra medications and or treaments and all other dogs will be put down. If my dog was to the point where he seriously needed vet care we would take him price not being an obligation right now I'm seeing if anyone has had a similar problem.

Right now he is playing fine, acting happy, eating and drinking healthily and running around and barking like the loud mouth he is.

First... Don't buy your dogfood from the vet. They push a brand that pays them to push it and they sell commercial food, which is horrible for your dog.

Try soaking his paws in peroxide for a couple minutes. Then put a clean sock on each foot. Tie them on and just make sure he doesnt try to eat them off (leave them on a little loose around the paw so fresh air can still get ot them). Soak his paws in peroxide every hour to couple hours or so.

Edited: Vitamin C and quercetin have antihistamine properties and are excellent for allergies. Medium to large dogs should get a dose of quercetin of 150mg-300mg two to three times daily.
MSM is great for skin allergies. 500mg daily for medium dogs, 1000mg for large dogs.

Edit: He is beautiful!
Try the peroxide. I think it'll help alot, especially if you can just soak his foot in it for a couple minutes. It'll get up in the toes and clean everything out of them (including under the skin around the nails). Also, for the pads, I use a product called "Tuff Pad." Its a liquidy gel you can put on the pads of his feet to toughen them up. Cuts can still happen but they wont be as frequent.

Your dogs would have stepped on some thing sharp that has lodged itself in the pad or someplace in his paw. If this has got here approximately, it could fester and alter into relatively painful. i've got had this ensue to dogs with foxtails stepping into their paws. whether it incredibly is pink and swollen, you may wager that the vet is the suitable place to take your dogs so as that they are able to lance out regardless of is in his paw, in any different case he will stay in discomfort and an infection can set in. Get him to the vet and function him checked is my suitable suggestion!

This is a problem that the vet needs to take care of.
you can talk to teh vet about time payments.
It is considered cruelty to animals if they need to be seen by a vet and you don't take tehm.
If you can't afford teh dog then take it to the shelter where it can gett eh care needed.

This sounds very much like allergies and you do need a vet to treat it. Sorry.
