Space is a four dimensional vacuum. The fourth dimension is Time.
Space is also a fabric "The fabric of space" that can bend and take on a shape, depending on the mass of matter and anti-matter in the vicinity.

Scientifically? It is an atmosphere consisting of incredibly low-density hydrogen. As to "how it got there',well many books have been written on that. Contemporary Hindu theologians actually come to closest to correlating their scripture with modern science. And of course there are many ways to conceptualize a Prime Force. God is one of the them.

Space is anything that has dimensions. It got here by a direct act of God, at the same moment that time, energy and matter "got here". There is no rational scientific explanation for such an event.

It is the absense of matter (though there is a lot of matter there -- just not relative to living on a planet with an atmosphere, moisture, etc.)
