I have heard this argued and disputed many times. Can it be substantuated or denied?

Yes it can be done. The outfit I hunt with in Africa sometimes have people who come to take elephant with bows. As said in the above post, Hill & Fred Bear are some of the big names that have done this.

As I said, the outfit I hunt with have people who want to do this however, 99% of them end up taking shots that do nothing but wound the animal and the guide is forced to take down the bulls with rifles. Some people like to push it if you know what I mean. Fred Bear has taken nearly every large animal on this earth with a bow. Its possible, but not recommended ! Many times Mr. Hill & Mr. Bear have been in trouble because they bit off more than they could chew. The natives of Africa take elephants and all other game with bows all the time, but they are also slinging 20 arrows at the bull. I believe anything can be done, but just like using a 30.06 to take an elephant, its not advisable !!!!!!!

Yes, Howard Hill, ther world's greatest archer did 3 times. He holds lots of big game records and even did all the arrow shoots in Robin Hood (1938).
