I would have to disagree with the first two replies, I served in the United Nations Interim Force In Lebanon UNIFIL, we were from the Irish Defense Forces on peace-keeping duties along the Israeli-Christian-Militia Buffer Zone next to the Israeli border, our main job was not to fight but control the roads and observe any activity by the armed elements in the area, cars were searched to stop weapons smuggling and Observation Posts and Listening Posts were set up in the valleys or Wadis to stop armed groups from either side trying to launch attacks on either Christian Arab & Israelis and Muslim Arabs.

(Each United Nations mission has a different mandate or porpouse and the rules are designed to conform with each specific mission)

In my time in Lebanon we took 3 Irish dead, two killed after being disarmed and taken prisoner by a member of the Christian Militia, the man who did the shooting now lives in Detroit, sells ice-cream from a van to little kids, the UN have never attempted to prosocute him for murder!!

Another Irish soldier was killed during the Battle of Atiri in 1980, in total between the years 1978 - 2000, some 40 Irish lost their lives while on service as Peace-Keepers in Southern Lebanon.
Beside the Irish in my time there 1979-1980, there were Dutch, Norweigian, Swedish, Italian, French, Senegalese, Ghanian, Fijian, Nepalese stationed there.

All our vehicles were painted white as were the buildings we lived in, we wore Blue Helmets and Blue Berets to signify we were neuteral U.N. Peace-keeping troops.

Its a euphemism Cops gave to themselves to stop people from saying cops. Peace Force, peace officer, just cops.
