I can't speak for those atheists on this site (obviously) but I used to be an atheist when I was a teenager. I would go on the internet to find open Christian forums in order to start arguments with people. What was my motivation you might ask? Well, I had doubts about my intelligence and spiritual strength because some of my friends got better high school grades than I did. However, when I got into college I started to feel a little bit better about myself and wanted to prove that I was exceptionally intelligent so I went unto forums and tried to sound like the most philosophical, deep atheist mind I could be. My intention was to be so convincing that the Christians would just say "wow, I never thought of it like that, maybe God really is a lie after all." That never happened.
I have no idea what the other people are trying to do but that's what I did and it was a waste of both my time and other peoples' time.

On the contrary, I don't care what anyone believes. I just resent being told I'm foolish, ignorant or just plain stupid for not having any supernatural beliefs. And, I really resent the religionists trying to have their fairy tales taught in publicly-funded schools as scientific facts. What they teach in their privately-funded parochial schools is none of my concern. I also don't want any of their narrow beliefs passed into laws.
I have more important things to do than trying to turn someone off from their beliefs. Besides, as a humanist, I believe people should carry whatever beliefs they need to feel good about themselves, whether it's God, Jesus, the Easter Bunny or the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

I will tell you this. I have never had atheist try to convert me. I have had many Christians try to do so. I am agnostic by the way. Who else. Mormans... But mainly Christians. I think you only say that because of their response on here. I mainly here them defend themselves and lash back when they hear something ridiculous.. LIke " Wouldn't the crime rate lower if everybody were Christian"? I have actually seen Atheist are more openminded and less hateful.. YOu are not serving your cause if this is the best you can do.. Just turns me off more.

Yawn. The exact same could be asked of Christianity. WE don't try to convert anyone, unlike Christians, JW's, etc. I don't know of any door-to-door atheist conversion groups. If our responses make you think, great. If you feel like you're in some sort of danger from us, danger of converting, then read your bible some more. Hide your head in the sand. We don't care what you believe.

Questions like this give me a migraine. How can we possible 'convert' anyone when we do not have any religious beliefs? We are all different with different ideas and interests. Theists are the sheep who all think and believe alike.

No, it is because history has shown us that a belief in God will eventually lead to disagreements, arguments, fights and wars.
People hurt themselves over beliefs in God.
It is a beneficial thing for mankind to understand that there is no God that requires them to convert others, or kill infidels or commit genocide in Bosnia.
We are trying to help you see the destructive reality of your belief sytem.

Because we see the ignorance of belief in something that lacks evidence and want to dispel it. Besides, Christians (and other religions) have a major effect on society and government. Try to look at things from a broader view.
I'm agnostic, actually, so I'm not denying God, but... you still have no evidence.

The same question can be asked by replacing "atheist" with "christian."
I think most atheists don't care one way or another. We don't knock on people's doors getting them to convert. We don't preach and tell people they are going to hell. We don't kill in the name of ANYTHING. We don't not want abortions because it will lessen our pool of potential atheists.
The list goes on, but I'm sure you catch my jist.

It's the "ship of fools" syndrome. Everyone knows the ship is sinking and they all agree that the problem would solve itself if only there were a few more people on board. This theory is applicable to most groups.
