There were all kinds of cartridge and cassette based videotapes systems used earlier. Hi 8 evolved from and uses the same tape cassette as Video 8. There was an earlier slightly smaller 6mm (quarter inch) cassette developed by technicolor. Both VHS ahd its cousin Betamax use half-inch tape. The earlier EIAJ open reel half inch could be loaded into cartridges after recording for easy handling playback (cartridge vision). A very popular version call U-matic by Sony uses large cassettes with 3/4 inch tape. This large cassette size was also used by the first digital decks, D1 and D2. D3 and D5 used half inch tapes, with D9 being in a standard VHS shell. Most digital recording now is on DV and miniDV tape.

Prior to cassettes, video was recorded on open reels, first using 2 inch wide, then 1 inch became standard. Just one of the 2 inch reels when they came out cost as much as a Cadillac automobile!!
