What are some of the ways to transition from an engineering role to a management role?

If you want to manage in an engineering organization, you must demonstrate that you can manage projects and people who work those projects. That is assigning people to tasks by their skills and providing motivation and direction to meet project milestones within budgetary constraints. --- If you demonstrate skills in these area, you will be assigned to larger and more important projects and will progress up the management ladder.

If you are talking about non engineering management, the the best approach would be to get a masters degree in business administration to complement your engineering degree. You should let someone in your area of interest know what your desires and intentions are in order to determine what opportunities are available and to make it known that you want to make the transition. Protocol says that you should start by having a conversation with your immediate manager superior.

In either situation the masters in business is a plus, but more so in the non engineering management area.
