On my way home I always try to make sure that I obey the speed limits and the traffic laws in this one town that has 2 police officers but no Stop Light. So I go through the caution light and continue on doing about 35 mph when I come up to a police officer in front of me doing about 25 to 30 mph so I slow down knowing that the town is about to end and he will either pull off or turn around and he does pull off of the road at the 55mph sign on the edge of town. Then he pulls back into traffic with flashing lights, passes another vehicle and chases me down outside of town. When he gets to the door he asks me if I have been drinking and I tell him no, then tells me that I was tailgating him and that It is not smart to tailgate a cop. He then demands to see my DL, Insurance and Registration. He gives me two tickets 1 for driving to close the other for an out of date insurance card and says that he could give me another ticket. I have never had a ticket and thought this was excessive.

I was pulled over on a Sunday about 8:45pm after leaving work. The cop came to the door of my car and seemed very mad and upset, he held me there for about 45 min and I believe he even called for backup as 2 cop cars came by while I sat there. My insurance is valid and I had 2 cards but both were out of date. As far as tailgating I do not think I was any closer than normal for such a low speed, however he claimed he could not even see my headlights. Plus he also wrote a quote on the ticket that I did not see until I got home stating that I told him he was "going to slow" and it is not true I know as everyone does, say nothing. My main situation is I asked a few friends and family members and they all know of the officer. Some have even said that I should pay the fine because if I don't common belief is that he will be looking for me as I have to go through this town everyday on may way to work, and he will pull me over again if I fight it. I just don't think I did anything.

Tough to answer without being there to see it myself. First, lot's of small town cops live to write tickets. Like every profession, there are bad apples. On the other hand,
Were you with in 3 car lengths of him at 30mph? if so, yes, you were tailgating. Remember the golden rule, one car length per 10 miles per hour MINIMUM. in other words if it's dark, rainy, icey, stormy heavy traffic etc you need to allow extra room. It's not an exact science but apparently for conditions you were to close. My personal rule of thumb at night is one car length per 10 mph plus 1 length for safety. Over 55mph it should be 2 car lengths for every 10mph over 55. What was the posted speed limit? prima facia speed is 25mph unless otherwise posted in most small towns. The out of date insurance card is simple, if you had current insurance and can show that, you get it dissmissed. If you had no insurance you deserved the citation and you will be fined, usually around $150.00 for a first time. Asking you if you had been drinking tells me it was probably ( but I'm guessing here) around the time the bars start closing. It's not unusual for people who have been drinking to tailgate. And not unusual to be asked if you had been. I have to agree it's not smart to tailgate a cop. LOL I'm sure you didn't mean two tickets, but that he cited you for two offenses. If he let you go on a third offense, smile, you got a freebie.

small towns know the residents, make sure you keep up to date with what is required by law to keep you from receiving tickets.
