I heard when your trying to lose weight you need to do a little strength training. Could I do this at home using can of soup or water bottles? I heard you could. I don't have any equipment do this besides that kind of stuff. Im already walking 5-6 miles a day and eating very healthy. So on a day off from walking those miles should I do the stength training?

Sounds great though realize one important thing before you start. It's not about losing weight but about losing body fat. That's one of the most common used things regarding fitness though realize if I tell you I weigh 215 pounds you would probably assume I'm overweight. What you don't know is how tall I am, how many of those pounds are fat vs muscle etc. The reason I'm telling you this is its likely that you could remain the same weight yet loose body fat %. The reason is because muscle weighs more than fat and thus getting stronger would increase your musclemass % and lower your bodyfat % but could keep your weight as the same.

Lastly you can use bottles of water or cans though realize that part of working out is about making it progressively harder for our bodies, because our bodies are magnificent at taking the same workload and expending less energy to do so, they find a more efficent way basically. Find differeing weights of items and work towards heavier ones as you progress. Good luck sounds like you've got 2 out of the 3 down already!

Yes! Strength training is an important part of your work-out. It tones and develops muscle that burns fat quickly! You can do it everyday. Arms one day, legs another, abs everyday. A can of soup or water bottles are way to light though. Depending on your condition ,you should easily be able to do 5#,8# or even more with 3 sets of reps of 15-20 . Get hold of some free weights or go to a gym if you really are serious. You may like the leg machines with weights too. They really work!!! You will see positive results. They will show you how to do it correctly and then make it your routine.

Strength training is more complex than cardio. On the other hand, if the goal is simply to have good bone density, carrying a backpack with 20 lbs. in it while walking is good enough. The effect can be greatly amplified by climbing stairs with weight in a backpack. Try to find a nearby skyscraper and hike up 50 stories with a backpack. You'll know this is exercise!
Resistance training (like push ups and chin ups) can substitute for weight training, as you're using your body as the weight. Nautilus machines are really good for this as they can exercise every muscle group separately. It helps to go to the library and read about strength training. Just avoid the magazines, as their prime purpose is to sell you supplements.

Hooray for strength training!!

Soup cans are okay for beginning, but you can find small weights for about $5 each at Wal-mart (that's the price of three cans of Campbell's chunky soup). Or you can join a gym with machines and free weights.

Or you can do pilates, I uses your own body to create resistance for strength training.

It is good to do strength training you can start off with soup cans, but you should progress to weights otherwise you arent working anything. start at 2 times a week and work your way up. More muscle burns more fat!

technically you can for a little while, but your body will quickly adjust and quit responding. You need to join a gym or go somewhere with enough equipment to challange your body.
