It basically comes down to a 'hey your a friend of mine so I will help you out' kind of deal. Mark Martin's ride right now, the 01 army Chevy is running off of a Hendrick Motor, the team, Ginn Motorsports is a satellite team of Rick Hendrick. Additonally, Mark is currently sharing driving duties of the #5 Lowe's Chevy normally driven by Kyle Busch in the Busch Series. Mr. Hendrick felt who better to replace Jeff Gordon in his 24 car should he take time off then Mark Martin. Mark is a consistent driver in the sport and is a close friend of the Henderick Family.

Why not Mark Martin!? If you had to put someone in your car for 1 day, and 1 day only.. Why not him? He's one of the best race car drivers EVER. I mean, You know he will give that 24 car a good run, and not do any damage to them in owner points. And if you play this out in another possibilty... What if she goes into labor while he's in the middle of a race!? Mark stepping in that car @ that point would let Jeff keep all the driver points for that race. That'd be awesome for him... He really wouldn't lose much then! Seriously though... I doubt we get to see this... There is a 1 in 7 chance that baby is born during a race! But if I was Mark Martin... I'd like to be in that 24 Dupont car @ Daytona for the PEPSI 400.

Why wouldn't you want Mark Martin to drive your car ? He is a great driver and a good friend of Jeffs ! I think it would be cool to hear them say; The Driver of the #24 Dupont Autmotive Finishes Cheverolet, Mark Martin !!!!! And if it happens I hope he wins even if Jeff doesn't get the points !

Because he is the best driver available to Rick Hendrick... Much respect between the two guys, Martin says it would be an honor to drive the #24 and Gordon says he would be honored to have Martin drive it!

I can't think of a better driver to fill in for jeff. Martin is one of the best drivers in the history of the sport and he almost always quietly finishes in the top 10. It's a no brainer.

That's just who they have picked to replace Gordon IF...IF his baby is born on a race day. I hope it doesn't come down to that, but I'd rather see Mark in Jeff's car than many others.

Mark Martin is a seasoned veteran driver that Gordon can count on. Wouldn't you want a seasoned veteran driving your investment. I would.

i have been a martin fan since i was three years old. but when he switched to chevy it broke my heart. carl edwards is my new favorite. i still go for martin but i dont get how he can have a ford dealership and a son with a lifetime contract with ford. a few weeks ago he drove for hendricks racing in the busch series. i really did not like that. i know i am not really answering your question but it is because i am asking the same one myself. WHY?
