Dogs have to have a scent to 'go'. It's a dog thing. It's also a marking of territory thing.

They're smelling for the spot they went before or where another dog went before so they know it's okay to go there.

To check for other animals dogs are very nosey! my jack/ chih mix is crazy i can't watch him use the bathroom he drives me nuts! if your dog has his nose to the ground alot make sure you get him/ her tested for heartworm and start a routine med for him/ her! this is the season for heartworms!

Dogs tend to mark their territory by urine and won't go just anywhere :)
