Are there restrictions or laws about that kind of thing? I know it takes a while to get license plates for the new vehicle...can I move to another state even though I haven't yet gotten my plates? My idea is to simply move, have the plates forwarded to my new address and then immediately register the vehicle in the new state according to their laws. I just wondered if I would get into trouble for moving it to another state without any plates on it...

If you know you're moving soon, then you don't need to register the car in your current state at all! Just get a 45-day temporary permit from your present state, and wait to register the car when you get to your new home! Who knows... you might even save some money!

Laws vary by state, it really depends on the situation in the state you're moving into. You already own the car, so don't worry about that, it's all about money and as long the paperwork is all okay, and you write a check, everything will work out okay. The problem will be with the metal plates from the state you're moving out of, they cannot be fowarded, unless someone you know receives them and mails them for you. If they get lost you could be responsible for lots of fines and penalties is they are not returned to the DMV.

2 issues to look for 1) taxes and 2) California
Taxes: you may very well get hit with sales tax issue. If you paid sales tax in your origin state, you may also have to pay in your targeted state.
If you can, do not pay sales tax (usually part of licensing) by telling the dealer where you are going. You will need to pay sales tax to license when you get there.
If you are moving to California, beware - There is much higher requirements on vehicle for California and it may cost you a lot more that just buying one there. Believe it or not, cars are built a bit different just for the California market.

I believe that most states require you to change your plates and drivers license within 30 days of moving to your new residence. So you would have 30 days. good luck

Only if you drive it. ( Don't worry) The state won't check to see if you paid sales tax in the original purchase state. Or if you even lived there. But, can you live with the fear?

you can move whenver - thre are no type of restrictions on moving unless you are on prob aton etc-- you simply go down and register your car and pay teh cash just like you hve owned it a year- no big deal-
