Science has backed up the theory of evolution with data.

Creationists then come along, start in the middle, and try to disprove it, making themselves look rather ignorant. And they don't stop there.

Some then go on to try and disprove physics, geology, thermodynamics, sometimes even gravity... there's even a group of people who still believe the earth is flat.

The difference between the two teachings is, oh... everything.

Now, you can believe in a god and accept evolution at the same time. I am only talking about creationists - those who don't accept evolution.

Some people believe that Adam and Eve were created in heaven and sent down to earth and that they were the first humans. Evolution teaches that life evolved through a very slow and gradual process and humans are one of the results of evolution. There are some differences of interpretations of the religious beliefs so that believing in those religions does not automatically mean that they contradict evolution

Mainstream "religious" teachings more or less follow a hands-off approach to evolution - or accept its basic tenets outright. It's only in the U.S., the Islamic states, and some other less developed Third World nations, that anti-science views are given much playtime. In short, it seems more cultural than religious. For example, the largest Christian denomination has no theological stance against evolution as such.

Many religions have come to accept evolution as reality.

Christians who stand firm on the creation story of the Bible are the ones who have a conflict with it. Their arguments are not exactly scientific.
