I think that varies from couple to couple, maybe if both of you like sports, you can ask her in a home game, if shes up to xtreme sports, maybe while getting off the bungee jump.

Its important that it will be special for BOTH OF YOU. In other words, if its in front of an audience or a nice weekend picnic, just the two of you, base it upon both likes and dislikes.

I got engaged at a historic old mansion/castle. Biltmore Estate. They have amazing restaurants on site.
We had a weekend getaway for our birthday that ended up being the w/e we got engaged.

It has to be somewhere that you have history at. Somewhere she loves or you take her a lot. Someplace that means something to both of you.
