The word 'tongues' means another language. In Acts when the apostles began to speak in 'tongues' they were speaking in other languages.
The Passover - a Jewish feast that all Jews were required by law to attend - had just happened. There were Jews from every nation/land They spoke a variety of languages...and the Holy Spirit gave utterance to all those that had been in the upper room, so that they might testify of the Lord, Yashua. They spoke in all those various languages so that men from everywhere could not only hear, but could also understand.
Not that the Lord can't give utterance of other languages to ppl today (He can), but there is no reason for this gift. God understands English! If there is no one in a congregation that speaks a language that someone supposedly is speaking in, then I would question the validity of the speaker.
This is but a minor gift, though some ppl believe you are not saved if you do not speak in so called tongues. They do not realize that witches often seek and receive this gift as well.
So now you know. Tongues is but another word for languages.

Let me see how I can explain this without going through all the teaching I know on this subject. In a nutshell - If you are Spanish -you speak the language of your birth - French, Italian, etc. People who accept Jesus Christ are 'born again', they become a new person (although your best friend may say you look the same) The change that takes place is inside. We are spirits first, we live in a body and we have a soul. (spirit- heavenly born, body - the temple which houses our spirit, and soul - our intellect, feelings, emotions, etc.) Now, when you are born again, you are given a language of your birth. It is a heavenly language and this is a gift. You then have the ability to open your mouth and speak mysteries unto God - who is your Father and knows what you say. Spirit-to-spirit. Your mind is cut off from this understanding (because in the natural, you would be trying to figure out what you are saying, and you'd say that it's gibberish, and you'd feel foolish, etc.) This is not how God wants you to feel because your spirit knows what it needs and your prayers, your sayings are for God's ear. But because God is so good and wonderful, he knows that the more you speak to him, the more he can bless you. It is also a way of building up your spirit man. He needs to relate to God and we often starve him, don't feed him the Word of God so that he can stay strong and keep our 'natural bodies' from the harm and foolishness we get ourselves in. When I speak in tongues, I am edifying myself, building up my faith and joy in the Lord, I am speaking to God and glorifying Him and he in turn is happy that I have taken advantage of this gift and using it and he blesses me over and over and over again. It is my heavenly language. It is not meant for non-Christians to understand, only believers and when people don't understand something they often talk against it. I thank you for asking the question and I hope I have answered it to some degree. There was a time I didn't know and I was empty and had no wisdom (not just knowledge). With being able to experience this wonderful gift, my life has changed and will never be the same.

There is a prayer language that the devil cant understand. The bible says when you don't know how to pray, the Holy Spirit can pray through. The other instance is to deliver a message in tongues and another interpret. Both are the Holy Spirit praying through you.

When someone truly has the gift to speak in tongues
1- the holy spirit talks to God for them in a language the devil can not understand. The message is sent directly to God and is not bothered by our conscience thoughts, want and needs but what the HS know we truly need prayer for.
2- God is talking to someone through the Holy Spirit. This only happens if there is an interpreter in the room that can interpret the message of the God.

Speaking under the enabling of the Holy Spirit. it's not human language, but heavenly
There are times, when one speaks in tongues by speaking a language- human, now- thay s.he has not learned
Either way it is under the direction of the Spirit
This is talked about in the New Testament
1 Corinthians chapters 12 and 14

Why is it that people who belong to churches that believe in speaking in tongues...are the only one's who EVER claim to speak in tongues? I mean, there are fundamentalist Baptist churches (they're not the only ones) who claim to do this...and there are not-so-fundamentalist Baptist churches who never do. They both believe in the same things...so why does this supposedly occur?
If God wanted His message to be heard, He'd speak it in a language we can ALL understand. He's God. He can do that. He wouldn't need a translator.

Praying in the Spirit. You actually bypass your mind and link your spirit directly to God's spirit.
The reason: Many times you don't know the right way to pray and so you allow the Spirit to pray through you.
I pray privately in the spirit. It's a part of my quiet time.

when you are speaking in tongues, it means that you are really in the spirit and it is also a gift from God and you are communicating with god in the spiritual realm

Speaking in tongue is actually speaking a foreign language, a real language, not gibberish. The purpose of this gift was to spread the word to other nations, which is why the apostles that were going to travel to other nations to spread the word were given this particular gift. God does not give us stupid gifts like babbling gibberish. There is a real purpose in His gifts.
