Jails tend to be short term (under 6-12 months). Prisons are long term. Many people use the words interchangeably, though.

As an example:
Paris Hilton is in jail
Scooter Libby is going to prison

Most jails are city or county-run. Prisons are state or federal.

Jails are city or county. Prison is state or federal, and for long term. Some jails can house people for a few months, but not long term like prison. And it's usually more severe a crime if you end up in prison.

sentences of 1 year or less are spent in jail. Usually at the county level. Sentences of 1 yr or longer are served at the prison level. Usually operated at the state level.

jail is a place for minor crimes. they are also a place for holding inmates before they go to prison.also the people going to trial will be held in a jail.
a prison is for violent offenders and people with long sentences.texas jails will hold you up to 2-5 years before you go to prison. this is done so they can have numerous hearings

the amount of time on the sentence, jail is usually two years less a day, prison in for sentences two years to life without parole. small time losers are in jail, the big time losers are in prison.

For the most part "Jail" refers to city/county holding facility. "Prison" refers to a state run facility where you go to serve a prison sentence. During your trial you would be in "jail", if you are guilty you go to "prison"
