I know this is totally stupid, so please spare me the mean comments.... I got got shoplifting yesterday and I was just wondering what the consequences usually are. I got a citation but was not arrested. I have to go get processed at the jail in two weeks and then see the judge two weeks after that. Does anyone know what I should do? Should I get a lawyer? The owner at the store told me something about restitution but I don't fully understand. Also, does anyone know what type of charge this is? It was 74 dollars worth of stuff...

It was 74 dollars worth of merchandise, and I signed a "restitution form" which the owner said something about the judge probably doubling it in return for lessening my charge... I am in Tennessee by the way. Also, it was in one of my favorite stores... they said I can never come back. Do yall think I would be ok if I went to the same store at a different location in the city?

How do I get a lawyer appointed to me? Should I just ask about that when I get to the jail for processing? Thanks so much for your answers so far!

Restitution, is up to the store. Let just say you stole $200.00 worth of stuff their restitution could go as high as 1500.00. Depending on the store. You don't have to get a Lawyer one will be appointed to you and if this is your first offense, you will be fined with court cost, filing fees, and restitution and most likely be put on a court probation for a year. Court probation means that you are not to get into anymore trouble during that time.

There are a whole lot of variable that you didn't list that will determine what happens. First, are you a minor or an adult? have you got a criminal record? These things and more determine what happens. My advice? yes get a lawyer. If you can't afford one ask for a public defender, but remember, PD's are a second rate choice. they don't work for you the way a private attorney will. On the store, most chain stores within the same area share data on shoplifters. You should call the store where you were arrested and ask them if you can go to another branch to shop. Don't be surprised if they say no. Shoplifters cost stores Billions of dollars in lost revenue each year.
Possible consequences are everything from probation for a first time offender/ court costs and the cost of paying the store for the merchandise, to jail time varying from 10 days to 60 days if you have no prior history. With prior history, the sky is the limit. Get that attorney.

In Missouri, you committed misdemeanor stealing. You will probably get a fine plus restitution which will probably be the amount stolen.
