I've been on the job hunt for serveral weeks. After hearing back from very few inquires, I decided to take a job at restaurant. I wait tables. I just started last week.
Today, I got a call from a company that I went to an interview w/ about 2-3 weeks ago. They have offered me the job.
This job is just what I have been looking for. Great hours, good work environment, notable company, great benefits. At the serving job, I just feel like I'm settling. When I orginially got the job, I told them I would be there for the long term. I figured that this job had past me and I was finding very few other positions in the paper, etc.
Now what do I do? The company hasn't given me a start date yet. I'm meeting with them at the end of the week. But, in the mean time, I'm not sure how to quit the serving job.
I feel bad, but this position is much better. What do I do or say?

Be honest. tell them you thought the company had passed you up. and let them know this is the type of job you had always wished for.
they may dislike that they hired you, but they hopefully won't want to get between you and your dream job.
Congrats on the offer.

Congratulations! Give your current employer 2 weeks notice if you can; in most cases waiter jobs is consider revolving door; come and go. Thank them for the opportunity of working with them and inform them that you've be offered a position. Shake hands and smile. You would always be able to work part-time if needed because of your pleasant attitude. Good Luck! PS Don't quit until you have a start date.

I had a friend with the same predicament a while back. Wait until you get a start date at the other job and then explain to the manager at the restaurant what your situation is. They are usually pretty understanding about things if you are trying to better yourself. Offer to work evenings or weekends at the restaurant. Who can't use some extra money here and there anyway? :-)

If you are offered the job,, and it is the one you want just explain that this incredible offer came up, and career wise you have to take it. That is how it goes, be nice and offer a two week notice, but you have to look out for yourself, your future, and your happiness.

Go to your current employer and explain the situation, give them your deepest apologies. Be honest. It is the only way to go. The turn over rate in the serving business is very high, trust me your manager will not sweat you leaving.

You could wait until you get a start date before handing in your notice. I would tell the truth, explain the situation, if they are reasonable they will understand. If they don't, what are they going to do, fire you?!
Good luck on handing in your notice and starting your new job
