How much does a penguin way? ... Enough to break the ice! Hi, I'm ______________.
Other pretty neutral questions:
- Where do you work/what do you do?
- Are you in school?
- compliment an article of clothing that they're wearing...ask where it's from, etc.
- ask if they're having a good time, if they're there with their friends, etc.
Just keep it relaxed ;)

Do you like (fill in the blank)?
Conversations should be natural. Just be yourself and be confident. You can't put other people's words in your mouth and think it will come out smoothly.
You'll be fine. Report back.

"what do you do for work?" that sound's pretty lame, but it's definitely something that you can talk about for a long time and could easily lead to follow up conversations.
