Pencils are not made from lead, but graphite. Lead is fairly soft but not soft enough to use as writing material. It's also a heavy metal so carrying around a number of pencils would probably be a chore. Graphite is a very common mineral a soft native carbon. Making it ideal for using in pencils.

If it such a common mineral how come I have never seen it?

Nope, its graphite. No danger to you at all. I was running through a park about 10 years ago and had a pencil in my pocket with the sharp side pointing up(stupid I know!). i jumped up onto a fallen tree and it stabbed me in the side. I had to pull it out of myslef, and there was some minor bleeding. I still have the "graphite tatoo" to this day in my side.

The only way to clean lead out of the blood stream is to eat the rest of the pencil. It'll all be drawn to your stomach and passed through your system. Lead-based paint can also accomplish this if you don't have the pencil anymore. Try to eat as much as possible.

Nah, it is made from graphite. It is just carbon. Nothing fancier than that. You will not get lead poisoning from a pencil.
