the buddha IS enlightened :-) And buddha is a description of a state of being so there is buddha-nature which is enlightenment nature. It has to do with becoming aware enough of your mind that you don't do, say or think things unconsciously. People only make mistakes because they do things at a surface level without feeling their own mind deeply. If you feel your mind deeply while you act and think then you feel a mistake at the mental level and change your thinking before you act, thus ending suffering which is caused by acting without doing that. There is also suffering at the mental level but that too gets eliminated as you work on changing your thought patterns.

A good question, I had to think well about this very well posted question...

Prince Siddhartha Gautama attained enlightenment then passed on his knowledge.

Upon reaching enlightenment, he became the Buddha and the term Buddha means Enlightened One...therefore he became the Enlightened One...for example...Buddha Dharma means Teachings of the Enlightened One...

Ther term Buddha does not mean enlightenment, it means Enlightened One as refered to a person who has reached this state. As Siddhartha Gautama was a Buddha he was thus an Enlightened One. It is considered possible that all may reach this state and can therefore be considered an Enlightened One...a Buddha..

The term Buddha refers to a person whereas Enlightenment refers to their state of awareness...

I hope this helps...

Peace from a Buddhist..

No person can ever become Enlightened since the Awakening that Enlightenment is, reveals that there was never a person to begin with. The Truth is Oneness. Therefore, there is nothing that Awakens; nothing that can become Enlightened.

The event called Enlightenment happens through the vehicle of perception that the human is, but to whom does this Enlightenment occur? That which One IS, is Consciousness itself, and Consciousness is the Source, and was never 'asleep' to begin with. So, strangely, Enlightenment does not happen TO anyone or anything. This is why Ramesh (I think) says "The one who was never awake, must sleep, and the One who was never asleep, must awaken."

Your second option is closer to the Truth. Buddha nature IS Awakened Being, which is your true nature right Now. It cannot be otherwise, cannot be found, cannot be caused. It already is what You Are. If you meet the Buddha on the road, kill him. Neti-Neti. (Not this, not that)

In depictions of Sakyammuni - the historical Buddha - the earth-touching gesture is made with the Buddha sitting in the lotus postion. His right hand falls over his right knee and touches the earth. This mudra recalls the moment prior to his enlightenment when the Buddha called upon the earth to witness his perfect commitment to gaining complete realization. In short, therefore, the earth-touching gesture symbolizes the Buddha's enlightenment.

Buddha was the first enlightened one, that is, he had learned true wisdom and lived his Karma, (return to earth), faultlessly which forever erased all the bad and evil he had inflicted on other beings in previous lifetimes. This is what all Buddhists seek, to get off the karmic wheel by becoming enlightened...the final permanent escape from pain, and going to Nirvana, a place of eternal blissful sleep.
