university crowds (I base this on the attempt made by the University where I live to make me abort my son who was born normal but, they kept trying to talk me into an abortion merely because I was 35 when I had him. They told me that there was a great chance he would be a Down's Syndrome child and they weren't even human because the body normally screens them out and gets rid of them naturally but, once in a while one slips through) , so do you feel they have a soul?

I personally feel they are God's special children, who are more innocent than most people but, most assuredly they have a soul.

My dear woman who called me a liar: Where the placenta wasn't, my son was, they could not find a safe area to tap for amnio. Several other tests were taken and according to them I was going to deliver a handicapped child. They even called me into my 5th month trying to get me to abort. You my friend are just plain wrong. Try to adjust, I know it is hard for you.

Why do people have such a hard time believing this when even now people call babies Zygotes and fetuses and everything other than a baby. This should not shock you. If it is human at that age then why are so many of you shocked that people are actually against abortion? This is the thing about the research area, they change their language according to what they want to accomplish.

I've known many people with Down's, and I think the world would be a colder place without them. They bring such innocence and delight with them. I've loved every single one of them.

Edit: As a sidenote, I believe your story. When my mom became pregnant with me, she was forty-two. She was advised to have an abortion, because either she or I would die during her pregnancy or labor. There was also the chance of birth defects.

She sought a second opinion.

YES! definetly they have a soul! I guess I shouldn't be as shocked as I am that people could even think that... My best friend's brother has down syndrome, and He is a smart little kid! He knows when its time to eat, and when its time to go to bed, and his mom has been home schooling him a little. He even has memorized parts off of movies and acts them out for us. But theres no way He doesn't have a soul! He's the sweetest thing, and if you've been crying He will come over and give you a hug, or at least ask you whats wrong. He's just a part of God's creation that we don't understand why things happen that way... I told my friend once that he brings so much joy to that family that they wouldn't have had if he had died in that hospital... He is truly a blessing!

I have trouble believing that a university (as a whole or even just a few people who happen to be attached to a university) told you that babies with down syndrome “weren't even human”. I think you may have taken what they were saying to you out of perspective.

I have worked with children who have down syndrome as a preschool teacher and they were WONDERFUL people (with or without a “soul”). I am glad they exist.

However, I certainly wouldn’t cast the first stone at a woman who made the choice to abort a fetus that was at high risk for down syndrome (it is not possible that your being 35 was the SOLE reason your child was at high risk for down syndrome). Still, I would also deeply respect you for deciding not to have an abortion. I don’t know what I would do in such a situation.

I was 39 yrs old when I had my son. I took all the tests. the Dr. told me that I had a good chance of having a child with down syndrome because of the congenital heart defect he had. he asked if I wanted to terminate the pregnancy. my answer was no...and the conversation was dropped and never brought up again by the perinatologist.
today I am the mommy to a little boy who happens to have down syndrome.
he is the sunshine of my heart!....he has a soul...I see it every time I look into his eyes, I see it in the way he loves all unconditionally, I see it in his acceptance of others, I see it when he walks up to strangers and says "hi" and shakes their hand in greeting......it is a soul I wish I had...for it is a nonjudgmental soul, one that doesn't know the word hate and never sets out to hurt others.

Downs Syndrome people are the ONLY people I know of that do not care about your race, sex, religion, etc. As long as you are nice to them, they will love you. Innocent to be sure, but they can surprise the hell out of you with what they say and do.

I do not believe in a god or in souls. They are just great people.

I'm helping to raise my girlfriend's son. He has Down's. He has an abnormally large personality, and would certainly have a soul, in my opinion, if I believed such a thing existed. I also agree that the body is supposed to screen them out. Don't generalize "University crowd". That's not right or accurate. God is imaginary.

It's sad to see the response your getting from a University. Every human has a soul from conception to natural death and are equal in the eyes of God. I will pray for you and this University.

Wow! Can't imagine anyone could say such a thing!
Actually said "not human"? !! Wow!
Sure, the risks are greater, but the rewards are tremendous.
My pregnancies were high risk too- I have Epilepsy, and my pregancies were discouraged as well, but I have two precious children, now 26 and 23

Many downs children offer something none of us can offer to the world. Compassion. They can see beyond people's looks and material wealth, they live with humility, they can befriend anyone and not judge. Of course they have souls, and serve a function in life. I fully believe God is in control of these people (not just children).
