No not really. If you can take a peek in his wallet when he's not looking he would have a military ID. He would also have a short hair cut..and he would also have a base tag on his car.

The only way a civvy is going to know for sure is to look at his ID card. He should carry it at all times so if he can't ever produce it (says he forgot it, left it at home etc) then he is most likely lying.
UK troops do not wear dog tags unless deployed on ops, there is nothing to distinguish their cars from any other car, and in fact, for security reasons they should try to blend in with the population and not advertise their military status, especially outside of a garrison town.
Edit to add:
My settings are for UK & Ireland Questions so the answers about British army would be correct.
BKgaddis - the answers YOU don't understand are not dumb - just not US Army details. Your settings must be for all English language questions and guess what? There are other countries apart from USA that speak English! Now who's being dumb?

I'm assuming you mean US Army.
Like I said in the other thread...The Army was using the social security number for identification long before Clinton...
Anyway...
Chances are slim to none that you will get information about any Soldier from the local military installiation. Unless you are family, it's none of your business, and even if you are family, you're not likely to get much help.
Couple of ways to go about this...
1. Find someone who is already in the Army and ask him/her to look your friend up on the Army web portal white pages. As a civilian, you can't get into it, but any Army person can...
2. Ask to see his ID card, like has already been suggested. If he says it's classified or he is covert ops, thus doesn't have one, chances are he's full of crap.
3. Bring up in casual conversation that you heard something about the Army Values...ask him if he remembers what they are. If he has gone to basic training in the last 5-6 years, he'll know them quite well, or at least should be able to list off a few of them (by the way, they are loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity, personal courage). Or, ask him to recite his general orders....the first one will start out with "I will guard everything within the limits of my post..."
Anyway, if you don't trust the guy at this point, there's probably not much future there...lots of folks lie about being Soldiers.

There are some dumb answers listed here. The most discreet way is to ask him for his AKO email address. Every soldier is required to open an AKO account and most use it often. If you want to be direct, then ask to see an ID card. It is white and will have rank, SSN, DOB, etc...Don't be fooled by some of these answers
such as,,,,,dog tags. I never wear dog tags except when at work. An 8 digit number??? Never heard of it, we use our social security number for everything.
If your not near an active duty base, then he may be a reservist or national guard which don't always fit the normal appearance (ie...longer hair until his drill weekend)and if he is new to it, he may not be too familiar with the military. I believe a new reservist can sometimes wait a while before going to Basic Training.

Give them all of your personal data, bank account numbers, etc and if your accounts are drained...that person is not trustworthy and most likely not in Army at all.
Seriously, you can write and call their military unit and the base commander or someone will verify.
Thanks to Clintonism...there are no more serial numbers...the person has to trust YOU with their social security number. A fine kettle of fish, that!

Well, it takes one to know one. Any doubts just assume he is lying , ask him for his service number ,which he should be able to rattle off in double-quick time. You never have to think twice, it is burned into your brain.
As this is the UK site, I have answered from that perspective.
But still the yanks muscle in !

If you have suspicions then you have problems. Avoid him or keep things very cool until you get to know him better. Otherwise you'll be all alone with VD, a reputation, or a baby, or all of the above.

ask to see his IDcard. he has to have it on his person at ALL times, so if he tries to tell you he left it home or it's secured..he's full of it.
It will be a white card, with his picture in color, and the seal of whatever branch he is in on the front. there will also be a little gold seal . that's where the smart chip is.
