I'm a disabled college student who has to use a tape recorder for classes, & in my psychology class today, there was a chick sitting in front of me, & we had class discussion, & every time someone behind me said something, she truned around & was smacking on her gum really loud, & I listened to the tape after class, & her gum-smacking picked up on the tape. I was FURIOUS! & my ears are sensitive to loud gum chewing.

I was thinking, "Damn! She doesn't even care about what my needs are. Just as long as she can get the pleasure in doing what she WANTS"

Many college students are living with parents, going to school paid for by parents, driving a car paid for by parents and spending money given to them by parents. They don't appreciate their college education at all. Many don't care about how others feel or even know how hard it is for some people to go to school.

I am assuming that your college knows of your disability. If so, then they need to make accommodations for you. Your instructor in that class can make sure you are sitting where your taping should turn out well. You can demand your rights in a nice way. No instructor can turn you down when you ask for accommodations in class.

I would be tempted to play back your tape to the gum-smacking hussy but I guess that isn't a very nice suggestion.

Is she aware of your needs? You can't assume just b/c you are disabled that everyone knows exactly what you need. She may not even realize that you have a tape recorder.

I am studying to be a teacher, so I understand those with special needs. However, I would not expect other students to know how to address your condition. The only way they would, is if you or the professor addressed it.

Simply ask the girl not to pop her gum and give the reasons you state.

Don't assume that people are going to know what and how to handle your condition, everywhere you go.

If you have a problem that requires a tape recorder, then perhaps you are better off sitting right in front. Maybe even off to the side. You can't ask everyone to be absolutely quiet for your tape recorder. Next time, it may not be the gum, but someone playing w/ papers or someone excessively sneezing or coughing.

Explain what happened to your professor if necessary play the tape and ask him if it would be possible to sit somewhere in the classroom that this won't happen a second time.
