I think now it is the best time to get another computer or operating system. Windows 98 is not supported anymore as of July 11,2006. So if you have a problem with it, you will get a hard time in getting it solved. There will be no techincal support by windows. Windows 98 also wont support some of the newer softwares. Many companies are also discontinuing 98 support. If not get a cheap computer with windows xp of if you want get vista. Fo now xp is good enough. You can keep using it if you want with no problem if you arent going to be heavily using it.

Windows 98 should continue to work but Microsoft discontinued support for this software a few years ago. New software will probably not work on this machine. As long as the software you have is all you need you should be able to continue to use the computer until the hardware dies. Do do some maintenance on your computer. Clean out all .TMP files and do a disk clean up and a defrag your hard drive.

You can use it as long as you want to. However, Microsoft stopped supporting Windows 98 and Windows ME on July 11, 2006. This means that they are no longer making patches, security updates, or drivers for it.
You will want to bookmark this page on the Microsoft site:
http://support.microsoft.com/ph/1139 to use their knowledge base should you run into problems.
Should you upgrade your OS? Depends on why you use the computer. It will not take long for hackers and others to find the last of the vulnerabilities in Windows 98 to create problems for people that will no longer be fixed by Microsoft, so if you use it regularly to connect to the internet you will want to make sure you have a really good firewall, good anti-virus protection that is kept up to date and a good anti-malware program.
If your computer is meeting your needs, continue to use it. Just be aware that if, say, your printer dies - you will not likely find a new one that is plug and play compatible with it, and things of that nature.
In the meantime, you might want to start saving up a bit of cash for a new machine, my only advice on that is do not let yourself get sucked into a Vista OS for home use unless you are planning on buying a high end box with a lot of ram and a very fast processor. Vista is lovely with adequate power, it is a drag without it. On a new box, stick with XP Service pack 2 for home or home office use.

You can actually use it for as long as you want. The only drawback is that some software might not be compatible with it anymore. I still have a PC running Windows 98 and it works fine. As long as you don't need programs that are not compatible with Windows 98, you are good to go.

You can install the Ubuntu Linux operating system on it ( www.ubuntu.com ). Ubuntu is free and will always be free, so updates will be offered forever. It is very user friendly and is faster than Windows. Try it : )
