in task manager I get, 4 columns-im. name -user name -cpu- mem usage how do i get tasks running etc. ?

I used to get more dialogue boxes with tasks etc.

The Processes tab has all of the currently running processes. If you go to the Applications tab, you will see all of the programs that are loaded and currently available to be viewed.
