Hairballs. I have a long-haired persian cat and she hacks up this orange colored turd thing. It smells, too. Even if it's not coughing up a hairball, it may still be what's going on. If you're really concerned, get with your vet.

Usually the cause is hairballs or worms. Another possibility is eating too fast.

I would make sure your cat is wormed.

Get Petromalt (from a petstore like PetSmart). It's a hairball gel that cats love, to pass and prevent hairballs. Or you can use mayonnaise periodically on their paws.

Feeding free-choice dry keeps cats from gobbling their food when they get it. When the food is available all the time, they have a tendancy to just nibble often.

If you change foods, sometimes there is an ingredient that doesn't agree with a cat and you need to change back or try another brand or flavor of food.

Your cat is probably hairball prone. Check the vomit and see if it has a lot of hair. If this is the case you can buy a hairball remedy at your local pet store. Make sure to groom your cat to help it get rid of excess hair. Most cats love to be brushed and grooming is a good time for bonding.

Hairballs and plants are the culprits in my house. I buy an cat food that helps with hairballs (along with weekly brushing). I also have a catnip plant that I let them have access to. It keeps them from chewing on my other plants.

Hairballs. Give your cat a pea sized glob of petroleum jelly or a small amount of mineral oil a couple of times a week.
Dab it on his paw. he will lick it off.
Brush him to keep the shedding (and the hair he grooms off himself) to a minimum.

Cats vomit.
It's what they do.
They vomit if they are bored, they vomit if thety are not bored; they vomit if they have been licking their fur, they vomit if they have not been licking their fur; they vomit if they have eaten too quickly, they vomit if they have not eaten too quickly.

Cats vomit!
