The dips that you use for dogs cannot be used on cats.

Pyrithrin is a natural poison but very toxic.
Perithrin is a synthetic
Resmithrin is also synthetic
Carbaryl is in another family of poisons
Malathyon is very strong & smells bad.

The list goes on. I have dipped hundreds of dogs but never a cat. There are special ones for cats due to their constant licking. The dips you use on a dog will kill a cat.

I would not advise you to pick your poision cause it depends on what insect you are trying to get rid of. Most dips will work on both fleas & ticks. But, get the special stuff for your cat(s).

Buy a two flea bombs from Home Depot and a jug of outdoor flea spray. Get your dogs out of the house and open all the inside doors, closets and cupboards. Read the directions on the cans. Set one on newspaper in the back room and one in the front of the house. Set the back one off, then walk quickly to the front one and set it off. After two hours come back and wash your dogs in Dawn dish soap, starting with their heads. Cut a lemon into quarters and place in a bowl. Cover the lemon with boiling water and let it steep overnight. Next day add a bit of eucalyptus oil and you have a flea repellent that you can use in a spray bottle. Spray all over your dogs remembering especially behind the ears and around the head generally (careful of eyes), around the base of the tail (dont get it on their little bum holes or they will cry), and under your dog’s armpits. In the meantime, after you bomb the house, vacuum all over including behind and under the furniture and the floors of the closets. Empy the contents of the vacumn into a sealable plastic bag and put it in the outside trash. Now go around the entire parimeter of the house with the Flea Killer. Also spray the whole yard. When the dogs come in from going potty, wash their feet with a wet cloth so they don't lick the piosen. In about a week get two more bombs and do it again to be sure that you didn't miss any hatching eggs.

Yes, I have used flea dips years ago before products like Advantage were available. It is a pretty toxic concoction, and can kill a cat if mixed incorrectly. It only kills the live fleas. It does nothing for future fleas or eggs, so you can dip your dog/cat, but the next day they could be covered with fleas again.
Try looking on line for sites that you can order Advantage or Frontline at reduced costs.
They are well worth it.

Use Revolution or one of the others offered by your vet. You can also buy them online cheaper once you've figured out what to use. Should you not be able to afford the above, wash your animal in Dawn dish soap. Soap kills fleas but they will be right back on the animals so you will need to treat the area that they are in be it yard, house, blankets, rugs, etc. Let the soap on your animal for about 10 minutes and all the fleas will be dead. Use baby shampoo on their face so it doesn't get in their eyes. Fleas are dangerous to your animal and cause tapeworms. I was explaining this to a person who looked like they didn't believe me when a fireman happened by and explained that soap kills a lot of bugs. The fire department uses dish soap on bees. The first suggestion is the best and the easiest.

Flea dips work; however, they don't prevent fleas and ticks. They can also cause pain if your pet is covered in bites. Frontline Plus and the equivalents are your best bet.

Get the expensive treatments from the vet. They're a lot of money, but they really work. Use revolution or frontline. Those are my favorites. Nothing else really works to totally eliminate the problem.
