There are lessons on youtube.com... but your best bet if you dont want to get a teacher is to buy a beginners book from your local music store, or find one online.. get a book that comes with a cd...

I enjoy all kinds of music and even though I have been playing for years am still a beginner. A long time ago someone showed me how to make bar cords which are basically a very simple chord structure using your index finger, ring finger and pinkie finger. It was really painful at first but it took the guess work out of changing fingering positions, you just use the same shape and move it all over the neck. The first song I learned was 'Hey Joe' by Jimi Hendrix but then started playing punk rock songs by bands like Blink 182 and Social Distortion. One of my favorite songs to play is 'Reach for the Sky' by Social Distortion. It has an extremely simple bar chord structure and also incorporates a very simple solo that you can pick up in about 5 minutes. The next thing is get a 'Little Big Muff' distortion pedal. It adds as little or as much distortion as you please and is good for anything from classic rock or southern blues all the way through to Metallica and punk. After you get the bar chord down, learn the open chord versions of G, C, and D with the occasional A minor thrown in and you can play almost any song ever written. Good luck!!

Disregard the previous answer... there are plenty of wonderful sites that have more information than one could ever need... and the best part is it's all free. I know this because of experience.
Of course one of the easiest ways to find some great sites is just to google it, but here a couple good ones to get you started.
www.guitarlessons.net
and
www.guitartricks.com (my personal favorite)
Hope this helps some!
