It is a new religious movement founded in 1830 by Joseph Smith. Who said he had a vision of The Father and The Son in 1820. During the 1820s he had several visions from the Angel Moroni who told him of Golden Plates were written of a record of the native americans who believed in Jesus Christ and their testimonies of Jesus Christ visiting the Americas.
The movement is called The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. They were persecuted during the 1830s by Tar and feathering, burned out of their homes, forced to move, inprisoned, and their leader Joseph Smith shot in jail by an angry anti mormon mob. They had to leave NY, Ohio, Missouri and Illinois before fleeing to Utah. They believed in polygamy before they were forced to stop by the Gov't. in 1890. The ones practicing polygamy now are fundalmentist mormons who are not members of the church.
Other practices that are different from other churches: Baptism for the dead, Celestial Marriage (marriage not for death do you part, but for time and all eternity) The Aaronic and Melchizadek Priesthoods given to all worthy men of the church. The Prophet, seer, and revelator of the church live today and God lives and Jesus Christ died for our sins on the cross.
For more information. Call for missionaries or go look in the web at http://www.lds.org http://www.mormon.org
http://www.fairmormon.org
As for the people putting down the church these are fundalmentalist protestants who don't like our church.

A false religion based on a fictitious book called The Book of Mormon.
The Book of Mormon has been proven to be a total fraud time and time again. Ask any non LDS Meso-American Historian or Archaeologist if any proof has ever been found to support the BoM and they unanimously say NO! Even LDS Historians and Archaeologists have been ex-communicated for telling the truth that the BoM is a fairytale. Why do you think nobody ever heard of Nephites, Lamanites, Jeredites, Cureloms, ect. ect. ect.
The Church cant even come up with a map to put in the back of the BoM so the faithful can follow along with the stories. Any Bible has detailed maps telling all about the places and events that happened in Biblical times yet the Bom cant even find any of the big places like the City of Nephi or Land of Zarehimla or anything else.
Thats because Joseph Smith made the whole thing up . The Bom is the laughingstock of the Meso American scientific community because they know it is a total hoax

Mormon is a term used to describe people who are adherents, practitioners, or constituents of Mormonism, and who are identified with the Latter Day Saint movement formally established in 1830. The term is most commonly used to refer to members of the Utah-based The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church), which is sometimes colloquially called the Mormon Church.[1]

First of all, it's not a cult! Mormons do not worship Joseph Smith, nor are their underwear "magic". They do not practice polygamy. They put family first. They use the KJV Bible *and* The Book of Mormon together. They believe that Jesus was born of a virgin, died for their sins, and arose three days later. They do not believe in a "different" Jesus. Mormons are among some of the most genuinely caring people I have ever met.

Also known as the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day saints. They believe in another testament of Jesus Christ called the The Book of Mormon, who's first modern day prophet was Joseph Smith. I once belong to the Mormon religion so I can tell you a lot. The religion was "discovered" in New York by Joseph Smith, who latter would gather followers that would go on to move several states during that time (between 1800 something to late 1800's) Including Illinois, Missouri and finally Utah (which wasn't a state at that time). They also have other books called Doctrine and Covenants that teachs basics of the religion and Pearl of Great Price. ...something else you would like to know? :)
Also I would like to add, the Mormons are NOT a cult...geez.

Some of the information is previous answers is incorrect, ie.. Joseph Smith never talked to the Angel Gabriel and the Book of Mormon does not teach about Joseph Smith- Joseph Smith translated the Book Of Mormon and taught from it.
The Answer given by Mr. G, David L and a few others is correct information.

It is the Church of Jesus Christ restored to the Earth in the last days before Christ's second coming. Hence the official name "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints."
The word Mormon is a nickname given to the church back when governors of state were calling for an extinction of people in our faith. It refers to The Book of Mormon which is another testament of Jesus Christ -- scripture that God brought forth to be a companion to the Holy Bible (not to replace the Bible).
