My camera seems to devour standard enegizer AA batteries. I'm going on vacation, and would prefer to take as few AA batteries with me as possible.

Ah, memories. The power requirements of a digital camera are extremely high and more so when the flash is on. Your batteries are measured in milli-amp hours, and consequently an 800 mAH battery will last 1 hour when 4/5 amp is being used. When lots of photos are being taken, this can be as little as 20 shots.Duracell are between 1800-2300 milli-amp hours and consequently last twice as long, but the best buy is rechargable batteries. Now the techie bit: Regardless of the milli-amp hourage a zinc copper battery will give a potential electro-motive force of 1.5 volts. A nickel-cadmium battery will give a potential emf of only 1.2. As the power is the product of the emf and the amperage, a ni-cad rated at 2300 mAH will not last as long as a non-rechargable rated at the same BUT you can recharge the ni-cad and use it for a theoretical 1000 times before the electrolyte breaks down. So my recommendation is to buy a rechargeable battery set rated at 2500 mAH, and a sprint charger to go with them. The initial outlay may well not be too shy of fifty pounds, but the saved expense in non-rechargables adequately compensates for it.

Rechargeable batteries are certainly the best, but if you do not use rechargeable batteries, get Energizer e² LITHIUM batteries (or the Duracell equivalent) and you will get much better battery performance. They cost twice as much as alkaline batteries, but they last four times as long.
