I think I overpaid on my state taxes. Should I expect a refund of what I overpaid? Will I have to ask for it? Or is there no hope?

You will need to file a state tax return to get any refund back. But make sure that you file for the refund within 3 years of the due date, including extensions. After that point any refund that you are owed will be lost. For example, if you did not file for an extension for your 2003 tax return, and you were owed a refund, you would have had to file a tax return for 2003 by 4/17/2007 to claim the refund.

States refund overpaid personal income taxes, but yes, you have to ask for it by filing a return that shows that the tax due is less than the tax withheld.

Time limits for filing and receiving a refund vary by state.

You must file a state income tax return in order to claim a refund. Otherwise, you won't receive it, but you could receive a notice requesting your tax return, which would end up being more hassle than it's worth. You should have filed your state return when you filed your Federal tax return...you did file a Federal tax return, right? Even if you're not required to file, it's possible you might still be able to claim a refund for your Federal withholding. The amount would largely depend on whether you are a dependent of someone else (your parents), and how much you made.

As to whether or not you are still entitled to a refund, it depends on your state's laws, but I assume since we're only a few months past the deadline, you should be okay, but you should go ahead and drop the return in the mail ASAP. For example, the IRS gives you 3 years from the due date of the return to file for a refund. After that you've forefeited your refund. You should be able to access your state's forms on their Department of Revenue's website.

Without more information, that's about all I can tell you. :-)

Hope this helps!!

You will have to file a state income tax return in order to determine the exact amount of overpayment. The downside is that you might find out that you UNDERpaid and owe the state money, Either way, you should file the return to prevent any penalties etc.
